1st timer... Looking for relable RC Truck -
01.06.2011, 08:21 PM
I am new to RC Trucks. Would like to find something fun, fast, reliable and relatively inexpensive.
1/10 scale
electric
4wd
This will be for my boys and me. Will hopefully get more later.
Should i start out with Lipo 1st off?
Was looking at the Traxxas E-maxx or Stampede.. I really like the larger RC's
What about the Electrix RC Ruckus truck. It's inexpensive anyways
Any websites or help is greatly appreciated

Cheap, fast, reliable; pick any two...
I'd say if you are after a truck, then either the Savage Flu or Traxxas Erevo- very different animals ( basher & jumper vs racer & speed machine respectively, pretty much ). You may want to consider a 1/8 scale truggy though as they are very robust and handle much better, but not so much for large jumps probably.
I would indeed start out with lipo though, nimhs are old tech and wont allow you to get the full potential of the vehicle otherwise. I'd avoid cheap rtr r/c trucks though, they tend to be little better than toy-grade and hard to upgrade/ find spares for.
Depends what sort of money you were looking to spend ( truck, lipos, charger, radio system if needed, esc and motor if starting out with a roller truggy + conversion kit ), how fast you wanted to go and what sort of driving/ terrain you were planning on. Give us a little more info and insight into your wants and needs, we'll have plenty of suggestions

The Savage Flux is a great truck and will take abuse like no other but is pretty pricey as well. Lipo is the way to go but also can get pricey. One thing i would not cheap out on is a good charger and electronics. The cheap stuff can be dangerous. I had a cheap lipo charger and lipo and it caught fire with no error on my part. i then bought good stuff and have never had a problem since.

well it would be a 1st timeRC. Something fast(40mph) range. It would be driven by 9 and 10 yr old boys.
Mostly a yard machine. Long driveway. A stripmine in our area
Was even thinkin the Slash type of vehicle
Brushless,Lipo
Just a decent all around 1st timer type of reliable RC. Something to tinker with and upgrade. Give the boys and I something to do together..

Well i think you may have listed the best vehicle in your own comment.
The slash would probably be perfect. It is very durable, not a ton of money, can easily be upgraded to be VERY fast but able to run stock until you could upgrade it.
I would definitely suggest the slash for what you said you would like.

I suggest a used MXB5T or 6T or Losi 8T. Brushless obviously. You could even get the electronics used. You might would want to get a used nitro roller and reform it with new E goodies. A buggy would be cheaper and even more durable. You can't be the durability of an 'uggy'
The new Stampede does look kinda cool same goes for the 4x4 slash. I am liking the Hyper 1/10 scale truggy alot.
Sadly brushless and stock Emaxxs don't play well together. I think that would be one of the worst things you could do. lol its what I did.
The Ruckus you mentioned doesn't look so good under the hood. Its 2wd, not brushless, plastic shafts, and has tamiya connectors. The body for it does look pretty cool though.

I would suggest getting the new 4x4 Stampede (although I have never seen one in person) as it is basically a 4x4 Slash but with more ground clearance and bigger tires for more traction. It is on the cheaper side of things compared to an E-Revo or Savage Flux but will still be fairly reliable and pretty fast with a 3s Lipo (11.1v). Whichever route you end up going I wish you the best of luck in this hobby and hope you have fun with it!

I would seriously look at the Traxxas 4x4 Stampede. You can get a brand new one for under 400 bucks, add some hobby king lipos and a turnigy charger. I think you should be able to get all of that stuff (4x4 stampede, 2 lipos and a charger) for under 500 bucks.
Built Ford tough, with Chevy stuff.

Hmm, if its gonna be driven by two young boys then something a little less full-on would be better, yeah; stampede 4x4 sounds like it'll fit the bill nicely and will be cheaper to run & maintain vs a larger truck.

For your boys..then a slash 4x4, stampede would do nicely. Easy to get parts for when they break the truck. For your self...a converted truggy is a great first time vehicle. They are easy to work on and all the major manufacturers parts can be had via many internet sites.
I own a mbx-5T converted to electric and it is terrific...built like a tank. Now, converting a nitro vehicle to electric is not that hard to do. If you buy a chassis kit from RCMonster it is even easier.
As far a durability of a large scale vehicle goes, truggies, flux, losi muggy are all good choices..it really depends upon your budget and wants. If you do go to a larger scale vehicle like I just listed, the electronics are key. ( The smaller, lighter vehicles are a little more forgiving, but, still need to be geared/outfitted properly ) Good quality components are the main reason I converted all 4 of my vehicles to electric. Castle creations is a superb company as far as quality components as well as customer support/warantee replacement. Tekin is also a very good company that builds quality components.
Almost all of us on this site have converted at least one vehicle from nitro to electric so if you decide to go that route almost any vehicle you choose, someone has done that conversion and can give you some advice if you need it.
Setting up the vehicle you choose is key as I said above..there are tool you can use to figure out gearing, speed, etc...found here.... http://scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/index.html. VERY good tool.
Best of luck

+1 on the 4x4 Pede or Slash. Durable, fun, fast, easy.
Also look into places like Hobbypartz for lipos and lipo chargers for great pricing. They sell hardcase lipos under the blue lipo and aces brands and both would be perfect for the Slash or Pede. They also have lipo chargers for aroun 50 dollars which for the money are great.

Stampedes are great trucks. My 1st real rc was a old 2wd pede and I still have it! In fact I have 3 of them, and plan to get a 4x4 soon. Lots of fun, and great for anyone new to the hobby.

Also the Stampede, or any other Traxxas vehicle with Traxxas esc, will have a training mode that cuts power to 50%. I'm not so sure you want to hand the remote to a 10 year old first timer for a vehicle that does 40MPH. Let them get the hang of it in trainer mode then set it for full power
RC-Monster RC8T 1515 2.5D/MMM/5s RC-M 4500mah
SC10 MMPro 13.5T 2s NeuEnery 5000mah
RC18T Mamba 25/5400kv 2s lipo + 6s NiMh
