For your boys..then a slash 4x4, stampede would do nicely. Easy to get parts for when they break the truck. For your self...a converted truggy is a great first time vehicle. They are easy to work on and all the major manufacturers parts can be had via many internet sites.

I own a mbx-5T converted to electric and it is terrific...built like a tank. Now, converting a nitro vehicle to electric is not that hard to do. If you buy a chassis kit from RCMonster it is even easier.

As far a durability of a large scale vehicle goes, truggies, flux, losi muggy are all good choices..it really depends upon your budget and wants. If you do go to a larger scale vehicle like I just listed, the electronics are key. ( The smaller, lighter vehicles are a little more forgiving, but, still need to be geared/outfitted properly ) Good quality components are the main reason I converted all 4 of my vehicles to electric. Castle creations is a superb company as far as quality components as well as customer support/warantee replacement. Tekin is also a very good company that builds quality components.

Almost all of us on this site have converted at least one vehicle from nitro to electric so if you decide to go that route almost any vehicle you choose, someone has done that conversion and can give you some advice if you need it.

Setting up the vehicle you choose is key as I said above..there are tool you can use to figure out gearing, speed, etc...found here....http://scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/index.html. VERY good tool.

Best of luck
