SERIOUSLY you guys should go from R/C and diversify into full sized propulsion!!!

I have right now a 98 passport with 30 lead acids in it and a burnt brushed motor Im dien to go brushless with!!!!

Electron power has powered trains for 60 years when do we the people get to enjoy millions of miles of operation like Santa fe???
I have so many projects and not have the 30 grand A/C propulsion wants for there set up ><

Probably not -- too many regulations. DC brushless really isn't practical above about 20 horsepower. The magnets get too big, too expensive, and too dangerous.

Plus the voltages get really dangerous as well.

AC propulsion uses AC induction motors in their setups. Much better suited to 100+ horsepower setups.

Thanks for the motor pic Patrick. What kind of output do you think the 1717 is good for?

How would it compare to the larger 15 series? Halfway between a 1521 and a 1527, or closewr to the 1527. I never did run a 1527, but I have plenty of experience with the 1521 and the 1717 seems to be as big or more of a jump past the 1521 as the 1521 is to a 1515. Hope that makes sense. Just trying to get a feel for what that 1717 can do.

Still would like to see a few more 17 series motors. A 1727 would be very nice...

The 1717 has more torque than the 1520, just because of the larger rotor. I would think it would fall about in the middle between a 1521 and 1527 (just with quick Windows Calculator math...)

We are redesigning the rotor and stator on the 1717 right now -- trying to juice a little more torque, and less torque ripple.

All I know is that the 1717 easily pushes my 8th scale truggy around.... and that's when it's pulling my 2 year old daughter in her wagon.

Sorry -- forgot to answer your first question!

The 1717 is good for about 3kW in bursts under 5 seconds, 1 minute power is about 900 watts.

We use 1717s on some of our burn-in rigs (for military controllers) with forced air cooling, and they run upwards of 8 hours at a time at 500W output.

It's all about the heat... keep it cool (which means operate around the good efficiency range), and you can put tons of power through it.

OK, thanks for the answers. I will have to see how the 1717 does in my 5th scale project. It easily overpowers my lst, so I have high hopes.

Wish I had run the 1527 now, can't imagine it being more powerful than the 1717...

will the 1717 repair kits use the old rotor or the newer one being designed now?

I've always thought it would be cool to replace a car alternator with a brushless motor. While the motor is running you could use it as an alternator to charge up the batteries. When the vehicle is accelerating the motor could kick in to help fuel economy and performance. It sounds like the technology is there to make this happen right now. So its the regulations then keeping this from happening? Sounds like 20hp with the torque these motors produce this would be a viable idea. Wouldnt this turn a fiesta or corolla into a hot rod?

And yes, it all tucks nicely under the body :-)

Oh wow, nice work! Definitely is a tight fit in there but that thing will be a monster I'm sure! And that spark will surprise you first time you plug it in, but I think it's pretty harmless?

Oh yah, thought I should also mention that the Castle 8 gauge wire on the XL fits very nicely into the 6.5mm castle bullets. I did have to grind out a few thousandths from the connectors when I built my Turnigy packs though, and they also use 8 gauge wire, but apparently there's an allowable standard of variation within the "gauge" ;-)

I'll write up a review of first impressions today after a little runtime...

This may have been asked before but any thoughts on adding data logging to an ESC about the size of the MMM? I currently use it in most of my 1/8 and 1/10 scales and was thinking about hopping to the XL in all of them because of the data logging but it's a beast. It is however going in my Baja this weekend :).
