Can a Sidewinder SCT ESC power a brushed motor? - 02.04.2011, 02:51 PM

I have a slash that I have restored to stock, but it has a bad ESC.

I have an SCRT10 that needs a ROAR approved motor but I have a Mamba Monster Max

So I do have a need for a motor AND an ESC, but not on the same ride.

If I get the SCT combo, can I use the ESC to power the stock slash brushed motor? It's for my kiddo.

Yes, the sidewinder is a great brushed esc. If you have a castle link it is very easy to switch it over to brushed mode.

There is a small glitch in the software on the Sidewinder SCT when used in Brushed Reversing. Normally you would use the red and black motor wires, but the glitch uses the red and the white wires; it doesn't hurt anything running it like that. I know it was in v1.29 and v1.30, but I don't recall if it was fixed in v1.31.

Good to know this. I can see how that would have been hard to troubleshoot.

Can you advise us of a reasonable motor limit (number of turns) when using the Sidewinder SCT in brushed reversing mode?

I know a lot of the local crawler guys swear by the Sidewinder ESC, off memory I think we worked on a 13t limit on the original Sidewinder. Not sure if that's right though.

Castle said the original sidewinder had a 19T limit in brushed reversing mode. I hope the new one is much lower.

Speaking of glitches.

Be very careful not to connect a brushed motor to an ESC that is set for brushless mode or a brushless motor to an ESC that have been switched to brushed mode.

I fried a MM that way.

The original Sidewinder was 19T in Brushed reversing and 8T in Brushed high power.

Based solely on the amp draw capabilities of the SWD V2/SCT, I would estimate 12-13T in Brushed reversing and no motor limit in Brushed high power.

The original LRP Sphere went to Brushed mode as soon as the Sensor Wire was disconnected (or fell out). Fried a 5.5 Brushless mid race that way.

so just to make sure, for brushed reversing mode red is + and white is - on versions 1.29, 1.30, and 1.31
