It's brushless & it's a boat! - 02.12.2011, 11:45 AM

No kidding, I can hear you say, but, here it is. My new found speed passion.

I've have a new love interest and it's with my big twin lumped beauty.

I bought an electric ocean cat 'Genesis', 1045mm overall and came with 2075kv BL motor and running hardware, including plastic prop. I never ran it with that prop as I changed to an Octura X437/3 Blade Beryllium Copper type before it touched the water.
No radio, ESC or batteries came with the hull.

This configuration (ie motor) can only cope with 4S as you will soon see why.

The first run was done with the stock motor (obviously), a Mamba Monster ESC (mainly due to it's auto fan & I never had another ESC that could take 4S) and 2 x 5000mAh 40C 2S 7.4V lipos in series which is a 4S 14.8V configuration. Which ran perfectly, however, was a tad slow and had hot packs afterward. I think 2 x 4S 4000-5000mAh 40C in parallel would be very good for this setup.

The second was with same motor, Turnigy 180A Continuous 360A Burst 2-6S ESC running on the same 4S configuration. It was short lived as the batteries hit LVC before my fun was done.
No footage as I was on my own.

The third run was same specs as above except I thought I'd be daring and run 70% power on 6S. For a longer run time.
Amps were still there and the motor died...........overheating from a kinked waterline preventing cooling wouldn't have helped either. I'm lucky it was just the motor!!
For that second it went, it was fast and I knew at that point, I wanted to go faster!!

The third run was with a new motor, the one chosen began it's life in my Hong Nor BL converted truggy for about 2mths running happily on 5S.

I pondered my overheated motors demise and kept staring at these 2 Medusa Industries powerhouse motors glaring at me with their bright blue hue. Both were a 36mm diameter can, both 2000kv, but one was 10mm longer which will always produce ample torque for most applications.

So, there it was, squeezed into what looks to resemble a 2 yr olds t-shirt on that beautiful big busted girl you always dreamed about as a dirty old man that you are now, you know who I'm talking about!
A Medusa Afterburner 3680-2000kv 1300W capable of engorging on up to 30V of power!!
Perfect for my meager 22.2V kids toy.

After a nice run and being yelled at twice...........for being "in the way" of her below average videography (<< made up word) skills I came round for another run and spun the flex drive to the prop. Lucky for me it had enough grip to slowly make it's way back to shore.

Once I install a thicker flex drive and the correct sized shaft for the prop aaaannnnd balance & polish the new prop a larger Octura X440/3 blade with more pitch, I'll go back with 2 x 6S 4000mAh in parallel with 8000mAh for more available amperage and do a couple of runs with the different props to gauge the difference.
