Hyperion 1420i chargers

Is it just me, or are these chargers a powerhouse combo for a good deal?

Now for the big question, where do I score a 24v power supply? Can one be made from a server supply cheaply? BrianG, we need you!!!

People run the 12V 47A server power supplies in series for a 24V supply, you can check it out in the thread in the "General Electric" section.

There was lots of caution about doing so due to the hazards or potential problems that could arise if done improperly, so I wouldn't try it unless you are absolutely sure of what you are doing.

I love my hyperion charger and if this one was ac/dc like my eos0606i I would upgrade. I dont understand why they are only dc....I would gladly pay more for ac/dc model

Because these newer Hyperion chargers are fairly high-power, and it would be tough to make them with a big PSU built-in (size-wise and cost-wise). If you look at most AC/DC chargers they are the little 50W ones.

With a separate PSU you can use it with multiple chargers, and keep it if you get a new charger. Also if something goes wrong with the charger you still have a working PSU, where if they are together in one unit then it's rendered useless.

That is a great deal. I wish I could buy one. Maybe in august. I have a Hyperion I6061 I think. Its good but only like 50 watts so 550watts will be a big upgrade.

Exactly what simple champ said. I'm sooooo glad that all the chargers DON'T come with build in power supplies.

So if I'm reading the description correctly, the 1420i will still charge up to 14s LiPo on 12V input... just at a lower amperage, right? It says "less overall wattage", but does that mean it will be limited to 7s MAX and still 20A, or still 14s but only 10A?

So this will charge two different voltage packs at the same time right? Like a 2s 5000 pack and a 3s 5000 pack? How about two different capacities like a 2s 5500 and a 3s 3000?

No...

It charges as one pack so they have to be identical and ideally 2 matched packs which have been used in series.

Has to be said i'm loving mine...

The balancer isn't that smart though i stupidly connected 2 packs in series but then connected one of the balance leads to 3rd pack.

The charger did NOT notice that the total pack voltage didn't match the balance leads... Almost ended in tears

Alright so if we have two identical packs but they're different cell counts, say 2s and 3s, would that work? It would charge it as a 5s pack, right? Oh and what kind of power supply are you using?

Yes - I'm using one of the converted HP server power supplies :)

The nicest feature is the discharge / cycle - with an 80W discharge it actually doesn't take long to cycle a pack

Awesome, that's my plan too. I think my dad has a couple server power supplies laying in his PC junkyard that he can send me. Can't beat a free PS!

Any idea when Mike will have them in stock again? I'd rather buy from him.
