Outrunner in an E-Revo.......... - 07.28.2011, 07:42 PM

I got a KD 600L 1400kv outrunner for $27 plus overseas shipping from HK. I have always wanted to try an outrunner. I've heard that they have a lot of torque, and are very smooth creeping speeds. I'm about to get into long range FPV (remote live feed) video on my E-Revo, so this would be perfect in my adventures in the woods.

Motor specs:

1500 watts
58mm long (but the actual can is only 35mm)
43mm in diameter

Pics:

First out of the box.....

Next to my Castle 1518 monster.......

In the E-Revo......

Look how much room I have back there (with the 1518, I only have 2mm of spare room)

Now, I only got to drive it a little last night. So I am pleasantly surprised with this motor. I had it geared for 35mph running in tallish grass (yard needs mowing) and it was 85 degrees out last night (at 10:00!!). Although I was not brutal on the motor, I did push it well. I couldn't get it over 135 degrees. (I do have an aluminum transmission case, so that helps some) Later on today, since the sun will be up, I'll push it for all that it is worth. When I have my Castle 1518 geared for 45mph, I can run it like a maniac on a 100 degree day and not get over 165. I did notice that the motor would cool VERY quickly....even faster than my castle motor with a fan! I was very impressed with how smooth it is.....cogging in near non-existent. Only if I go 1/4 of a mph over the curb with it cog a tennie-winie bit. Despite the fact that the motor is considerably shorter than my castle one, it held its own very well. It has good torque (not as much as my 1518), but it for sure is not a wussie.

Ok, I just put a pack of batts (6s) through it. I ran it real hard too.

When doing lots of donuts and drifting (WOT the whole time) the temps would get up to 170, but only then. Just driving it hard with no donuts and drifting and I couldn't get it over 150. I also ran it through a lot of dust. I wanted to see if the open design of the motor handled the dirt. So far, no issues, but the inside of the motor is for sure dusty. I believe that under normal driving this motor can be geared for 35-40 with no problems. I am still amazed at how fast it cools down! It will drop 20 degrees in only a few minutes!

Final opinion:

Pretty good for $30, but my castle 1518 is going back in. It just has so much more power/speed. I'll save the outrunner for when I hit the trails and when I do FPV....its just soooooooo smooth.

What is your actual gearing?

I'm sure you can go for a higher top speed with no harm.

I love the outrunners too. Several have pushed my E Revo around very well.

Nice Tranny Case. I might have to get me one of those.

My gearing is 21/58, but with some big 'ole HPI tires on.

After I bought the motor, I found a bigger one on HK that had 1760kv on it....would love to try that one out, but my R/C budget is empty. :(

Forgot to add that my gearing is so high because I'm running LST differentials. :)

Outrunners like high gearing.

I ran a KD 600XL for awhile.

I had it geared 22/40 or something like that. On 4S it was insane.
