Depuffing a lipo. ...wait what? -
01.08.2012, 12:39 AM
Yeah, you heard right...
Found this... thought it pretty entertainin.
Sounds like it could be very possible.. but not for the faint of heart..
I'd rather buy new packs then to gamble like this..

Cool find rawfuls
I overcharged a lipo IN a micro-t and blew the chassis apart. I can't believe he charged his to 5v a cell and didn't have a fire.
I'm crazy enough to try this. I don't have any chargers or esc's dumb enough to overcharge or over discharge a cell, however.

interesting....can't say that I would do it, but, interesting. For the batts I run, a mere $45-$75- for shipped batts is worth it to have piece of mind

Some people on ES will spend a few thousand dollars building high voltage, high amp battery packs out of lipos from HK. If something happens and a couple hundred bucks worth of cells puff within the pack they built, I guess they find a way to try to salvage most of those cells. Especially if the cells are puffed but still show low IR, good voltage and still take as much charge as the good cells. I've seen it more than once myself, a puffed cell that doesn't show any defects other than being puffed. I will do this ''de gasing'' method in a heartbeat next time it happens to one of my lipos. Squeeze and poke, squeeze and poke. If things go bad, drop and roll, drop and roll

It is very important to work on the very edge of the cell if you are going to attempt this.
Everyone knows what happens during a puncture of the layers. The cell goes up in flames and smoke. Don't burn your house down.
Don't do this inside of ANY building, in case something goes wrong!
If you don't believe this, take a lipo outside and shoot it with a BB Gun.
Using something NON-conductive like a tooth pick is the smart thing to do.
Actually the puff itself will make the cell Not perform. It promotes layer seperation.
The pressure the heat shrink exerts on the cells is beneficial to the pack.
Puffing pushes back against this, leaving open space for layer seperation.
It is the layers touching each other that makes the cell work in the first place.
One other note: I noticed someone said this gas was toxic.
No it isn't. But it is very flammable. It is Hydrogen Gas.

Don't need no stinkin' vise and tooth pic. And I won't go outside 'cause it's too darn cold. I'm gonna do it on the kitchen table and poke that sucka with a finishing nail and squeeze out that hydragyn wit my bare hands while smoking a cigarette. Well maybe not 'cause I stopped smoking 2 and a half months ago but there will be a flame near by.

I've tried it also on Turnigy cells. They puffed back up & popped the hole seal that I had created

Depends on how much gas has been produced, it's firm because of how much gas is in the cell.

I'm sure with all the warnings out there to use good cells with our speed controllers this will not help. I can just see filling out a castle warranty work form and for type of batteries list depuffed, hobbyking cells(the new ones not the old ones). I'm sure they will fix ya right up.

Shot one of my Turnigy's awhile ago, it's somewhere in these forum archives.
It was pretty neat, but make sure you close up all the windows in the house when you do so...
Stank up my room like mad! (Shot it right outside in a dirt pit)
