1/5 Scale Brushless MCD RR V4 Prototype

Saw this and having an MCD gasser here, was very intrigued since at heart, I am an electric man.

Had contacted MCD awhile ago and from what they said looks like end of 2012 they are thinking of having something ready.

Since the MCD is not heavy like the Losi, they probably don't need as much to get stuff moving around sufficiently, probably an 8S lipo setup at most and that Castle XL ESC could work out, current shown setup is dual 3S lipos.

Hopefully they don't go with a killer price.

I doubt MCD is going to stick with that dual motor, dual esc setup. When that setup was shown Castle had just taken the wraps off of their XL esc and 2028 motor. Theyre probably developing a single motor setup and gauging interest hence the delay. I'd contact Mike to see if he could use your MCD as a prototype or make a one off for you.

Another option is making something yourself. Search rc-m for Redcat conversions. They use a similar drivetrain layout and it might give you some ideas.

I have an MCD too, I've been waiting for this for ever....

If Mike is up for making a setup for an MCD, I'm willing to have him use my car for a template.

I would be interested for sure. I am quite sure his conversion would come in at a price significantly less than what MCD will charge, which usually is an arm, leg, first born ... :)

It could potentially be more involved than just a simple motor mount.

I really wonder how much RCMonster-Mike could run with it though, a nice clean chassis, and do his trick layout for 8S setup (dual 4S).

People think we are crazy for wanting 1/5 gassers as electrics, but I think it could help bring even more people into the scale just because you can now run the vehicles in areas where the noise isn't welcome.


I also wonder based on how they have the MCD conversion layout if they are thinking of doing a fluid filled center diff as there is a lot of room there with that gear in the pics.

A conversion for that does not look hard at all. Looks almost the same as the RedCat Rampage MTs. The hardest thing to make is the collet that connects the motor to the shaft.
Someone with good machining skills could definitely make a much nicer looking one that I made..

If there is any design , I hope its a simple spur and pinion combo , exactly whats in 1/8 scale e-buggys. I converted my redcat like this and the simplicy makes it worth it . However my metal work is frigging ugly . Waiting for Mike to hook a sick piece. I gather the mcd and the redcat part would be exactly the same .

I would like the simpler design too. What MCD is doing on there setup other than the dual motor thing looks like it will put a center diff / pinion combo there.

A simple center diff (or spool) and motor mount is the way to go. No offense to your fine work Aqwut, but the extra gears used to install a gasser just don't seem necessary for electric use.

In the photo at the start of this thread, looks like MCD is going with a center spool. The Redcat Rampage XBE also uses a spool. I'm curious to see how converted Losi 5ive-Ts make out with center diff temperatures in the long run.
