Shorted out my 24s2p Lipo back - 06.07.2012, 03:42 PM

I got second degree burns on my hands last nite, plugging in my 24s2p battery pack into my bike. My whole hand was black and burned like a mother.... I was multitasking and didn't pay enough attention....so there went a dead short with a couple of hundred amps thru the EC5 connectors. My buddy and I figured that it must of been over 500A for my whole hand to be covered in black dust. There was small fire too. The pain lasted a good 4 hours straight and calmed down enough for me to go too sleep.

All the packs measured fine and need cleaning and some new heat shrink.

At least you are alright Romano. The packs can be repaired/replaced.

Quick thinking on my part, only left me with two big blisters. I'm all good and ready to do repairs. My wife still is mad at me though.

Man, I didn't have time to take pics of my blacked out hand. There is nothing to see now other than a blister and it's a bit swollen. Hand is also sensitive to warm water.

I have the utmost respect for LiPo's. I keep them in LiPo safe bags and then in a metal case. When charging I always keep them in the safe bags and under observation and away from things that can catch fire.

LiPo's can be quite dangerous if not handled properly.

I'm glad you are alright.

See though, I never understood the whole brushless bike thing. How could you possibly have fun knowing there is 24 Lithium Polymer Battery Cells right underneath your frank n' beans?

Hybrid, electric cars and any other EV vehicle have the same thing. DC power underneath and/or around you. Doesn't matter if it's lipo, lead acid, life, lithium iron etc. Anything can go wrong. Even modern cars still catch fire under the right circumstances. Motorcycles have their gas tanks under and in front your jewels. That is just as dangerous as me keeping my batteries inside the frame of the bike.

The swelling went down and it's just a bit sensitive still. Gonna order me some new connectors and fuses. Time for a fail for crap like this.

Yikes, how many connectors do you have for your ebike snell for you have done that. Good thing nothing else was damaged or anyone seriously hurt for that matter.

Just enough connectors to hook up the 24s2p pack. No extra's. But I'm going to try to make a modular plugin with PowerPoles, so the pack doesn't leave the bike.
