A BEC (battery elimination circuit?)negates the need for a seperate reciever pack/6v battery,by taking voltage from the main batteries and converting it to 6v.Basically they save weight (100grams or so) and mean you don't have a seperate reciever pack to charge.

Most escs have a built in BEC but it's best not to use it especially above a certain voltage as they cause extra stress and heat for the controller,so that's where an external BEC device like the UBEC comes in.Controllers that don't have a built in bec are called opto-coupled (i think).
