Upgrading the diffs

I just order the Maximizer diffs, Integy cases, and collars. Now I want to completley build new diff cases for the front and rear. I am waiting on these to also install my new CVDs. My goal is to take the old diff cases and CVDs and put them on the shelf intact. My question is what other parts will I need to accomplish this. Any links would help out greatly. I am still a noob when it comes to the diffs.

The only things you are gonna need are two sets of spider gears for the new cases (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXSP77&P=ML) , some kind of grease for the gears, and the diff screws for the RDL CVDs (original part that holds driveshaft to diff outdrive) - http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXDDS6&P=7 - just the scews in this link.
Also, take your time and build the diffs carefully. It is also a good idea to break the diffs in (use a power screw driver) before you install them in your truck. Once they are broken in, you carefully shim them so there is no excess play or backlash in the gears and they still roll without binding. If you get this done properly, the diffs are near bulletproof.

Can you explain the shimming part?

For shimming, basically you want to eliminate any excess play in the gears. The spider gears mesh with the outdrive gears inside the case. Any play in these gears will cause a lot of stress on them, so you take up the play with shimms (basically small washers). It is important that the gears rotate freely, but there is no additional play. If you can pull or push on the outer shaft (that the driveshaft connect to), then you may need a shim to take the play out. Once complete, the diffs should roll smooth and the outer shafts should not move in and out of the diff. I am not sure if the explanantion is clear enough. LMK if you need further clarification.

Ok that makes total sense. So just pickup a pack of washers when I get the spider gears and shim? Is there any certain number I should start with like two on each side?

You can find various thickness of shims to adjust your diff ;)

also make sure when you are putting the diffs in the diff case that you shim there too - you dont want too much side to side movement either - just take your time with it - you dont wanna rush this part.

I built my first one last night. It was actually it ws easier than I thought. I have to get a pack of the washers to shim some more. The LHS didnt have them on Friday. I have one on each side and still have a little play. I think one more on each side will do it. The part # for the washers are Traxxas 3981. Then I will just need to open the diff cup back up and shoot some grease in there and I should be done. Then just use my drill to break them in.

One more thing: Generally, you only need to add shims to the non-gear side in the TRX diffs (there should be one of those teflon shims on the gear side, but add further shims to the other side- this way you don't need to take the spider gears out, just add a shim and move on).

what is the best lubs for the diffs? oil of greese?

I use ofna high temp lube. It is thick green slime looking stuff, but it works well (smell a little, but it works).

I love the smell of that grease... It's a sticky kind of grease though.. You can smell the technique on that green stuff..
