Red face BL Newcomer Looking for Some Kind Advice - 09.20.2006, 06:09 PM

The BL bug has got me. I need some help from those that have a lot of experience, and this looks like the place to find it.

I'm working on a BL-LST2 conversion. I don't have the truck yet, just planning the project out. I'd like to start it this coming spring/summer. I have a couple of ideas of what I'd like to get out of the machine and hopefully you guys might be able to point me in the right direction.

Things I'm hoping to attain:
- Lots of low-end power.
- Respectable speed (truthfully 30 to 35mph is plenty for my use).

Things I'm not looking for:
- Land-speed record breaking fastitude.

I really like the specs on the Quark Monster Pro 125b ESC. My biggest "question mark" would be - what's an appropriate motor? I'm planning on running the equivalent of roughly 16- to 18-cell LiPo's.

Is there a Feigao model that would get me where I need to go, or is something like the Lehner 1940 or 1950 more what I need?

I really appreciate any help you guys may have.

I'll let some of the other guys speak for the motor and lipo's..
but I'm planning on buying a 125b tommorow actually, but if you're not going to run this truck until next spring/summer, I'd wait on buying the controller until you're ready to run.. I'm not sure when the Mamba Monster Max will be available, but i'm thinking before next summer? that controller should be the best controller you can buy.
also hold on the lipo's. the technology is advancing so fast, if you set your mind on a type of charger/cells, by the time you go to run the truck, there will undoubtably be better options available, and prices will have dropped as well.

also, you said roughly 16-18cell lipo's? do you mean lipo cells equivilant to 16-18 sub-c nimh's?

The equivilant to 16-18 NiMH would be either 5S or 6S. 6S being 22.2 volts nominal, and 5S being 18.5 volts nominal. You can get a Feigao or Wanderer (same thing) that would be fine, but a Neu 1515 would be the best option, but would require a Quark or Mamba Monster Maxx (should be realeased by the time your ready to get an esc) or even a MGM. The MGM controllers are a little pricey for one that will handle 6S though...

Yeah, I'm sorry about the syntax regarding the batteries. 4S to 5S for my LiPo's would be about right. I was referring to NiCd/NiMH equivalent numbers.

I mentioned the Quark because it's available and the specs are nice. I have no doubt there are bigger and better things to come. Just using it as a reference point at the moment.

You guys also mentioned the Mamba Monster Max. Where can I find preliminary specs on this setup? I've been to the Castle Creations page, but all I see are "coming soon" type stuff.

I'll also search for more info on the Neu motors, as well. I've seen them on the store page. Many thanks.

There is no telling when the Monster Maxx is coming, but it's said that its gonna be double the Mamba Maxx. 4S is about 12 cells and 5S is about 15 or so...It just depends on if you go with nominal numbers or if you go with higher numbers. By the way, nominal for LiPos is 3.7 volts per cell and the max voltage is 4.2. NiMH it varies from pack to pack.

That's too bad about the Monster Max. I'll be sure to keep my eye open for it, though. Thanks.

Not a problem. By the time you are ready to buy an esc, they should be out. I wouldn't hold my breath though...They probably won't be out until at least '07...
