Yes, it can.

it can handle up to 20 cells (at 1.2V per cell), while a lipo is 3.7V per cell.

You need to keep a close eye on the lipo's though. They may not be discharged under 3V per cell. The 7018 hasn't got a so called low voltage cutoff (LVC) so you need a separate one, which is easy to install.

the 12L would be a nice motor. Why an L over an XL.. weight.. Pure to keep it lighter. an L rotor is easier to spin up than a larger XL rotor (more mass) the L will spin up pretty quick and will jump from it's place. (don't get me wrong, an XL is pretty impressive too) i used to drive my 7XL on 3S lipo. (S means serial, while P means parallel) It was fun for bashing.

Somehow the smaller rotors seem to spin up faster and feel more peppy..
