I tried a 2s lipo pack with this setup and now the motor and esc are getting hot. I keep getting confused which way to go with gearing. Do I gear higher (larger pinion) or lower (smaller pinion) when this happens. It took me a couple of minutes before I could check the temps but the motor was 165, esc 165 and the battery was 85.

Try a fan over the speed controller. The motor temp looks okay though, maybe drop a pinion down. How free is your tranny spinning?

Nice setup for $80, I ran a similar setup in my T3 for months - 380 9t, Mtroniks pro. Gives a good balance of everything and nice power. The motor always run a bit hot unless I drove smoothly, never caused me any trouble though, I only paid $20 for it :)

Tranny spins freely, freshly checked, cleaned and lubed. I was trying to stay away from a fan but if I need one I will put it on. Going down a tooth on the pinion is what I was thinking also. I will try the pinion first and if that does not work I will add a fan.

Fair enough. I don't like running fans particually either (unless it can be done in such a way it doesn't look like a bodge job, which is hard with a Mtroniks unit), its cheap insurance against a damaged ESC though. The Sport Plus ESC isn't rated very high so I would still recommend a fan.

If you feel the need for an ESC with a bit more "breathing room" btw, Mtroniks do offer an upgrade service. Not sure what the cost in USD would be, but normally they're not too bad. Only ESC manufacture except Novak that does this I think.
