Talking Speed - 10.13.2006, 01:29 PM

It's me again. I am almost done with my E-REVO. I just ordered the last of the parts I need from Mike.

Anyway my goal is to find out how fast this truck will go, and then change the tires and check it again. What is the best way to check the speed of the RC truck.

Suggestions so far:

GPS strapped to the back of the unit.
Radar guns.
???

I am looking for the best way to do a speed test, give me all your ideas and suggestions.

I think you got the major ones...

GPS
Radar
Venom speed meter (not very acurate)

You could follow it in your car.:005:

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Silent...But Deadly

What about the Venom Speed Meter? Looks really easy to configue, and should be somewhat accurate.

Venom speed meter is only accurate if you have tires that don't balloon. Trust me.

Another idea, not yet mentioned is what I do cause I don't want to invest yet in a Garmin, is to have someone time your beast over a known distance. You can simply calculate the average speed. Have the truck at full speed when you cross the starting line, and keep it gunned till is crosses the finish line. Hence, distance/time gives you speed!

GPS is best though. Side benefit, you get a GPS tracker in the deal.

Type "radar gun" into ebay. I've got one of the Bushnell ones that seems to be pretty accurate and havn't had any issues with it. It even picks up the speed (26mph) of my little brushed 18T as well.

How do you get an accurate reading with a radar gun? Do you run towards it or away from it? Do you have someone hold it or just set it on the ground?

Thank you,

Towards, it's using the Doppler effect, so it works good in one direction. (that's what i presumed)

and yes, i am using someone to hold it. I try to run as straight to the person as possible. (didn't say it was without any form of danger..)

I've always wondered about that. The Doppler effect is simply a shift in the frequency when the signal hits a moving object. IIRC, if moving away from you, it's shifted to a lower frequency; if moving towards you, it's shifted to a higher freq. Why can't the gun be smart enough to see how it's shifting and automatically compensate for either direction??

Sorry for the highjack; but I just wanted to know! :)

Yeah, that's what i was thinking too, that's why i said 'presumed'.

That doppler is an odd thing. I don't know if it works with doppler, because it also works thru about .5" of glass.

If it is working with the doppler, it is creating it's own frequency, and it uses the doppler effect to measure. So it works in two directions.

audible wavelength used to be a great hobby of mine. I was an enthusiastic builder/tweaker. if you know it, i also have got a mlsa pulse measuring system.
