More new BL motors and speedos... -
11.18.2006, 09:00 PM
I was flipping through the new RCCA mag and found several things...
I found the new Dynamite C4 Big stick, which comes in 3 versions. A 4600, 5700, and 7700. Sound familiar? Well it also says in the description that they work great with Castle Creations ESC's as well as Quark ESC's...Hmm...BTW, the C4 Big Sticks look JUST like a CC motor except the color and the Dynamite has a sticker on it that covers the whole can.
I found the new Tekin Rage 540 motors. Not much info really, but they don't look bad...
And lastly, I found the new Tekin R1 BL ESC's. Not much info again, but they have 2 versions, can run BL and brushed motors, and are VERY small...If memory serves, there 1" by 1.3"...They also have a builting LiPo cutoff...

Now that's some great news.
Tekin should come up with a Monster controller to make a big party.
The name is Alawi. You can call me Al.
Nice to meet you!

The Tekin is compatible with sensored/sensorless, brushed/brushless motors.
And the come in two versions, it seems.
Castle Creations will have a tough competition with tekin this time.
Here's some more: http://www.teamtekin.com/new%20products.asp
!!! No heatsink?!!

True but lets see it pull a 8 or 9XL, without a heatsink. This is not a stab or flame,The rebel is my first esc and still runs today (10+years later) but i question the lack of heatsink.
Work because i gotta, play because i wanna
People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise

Yeah, I'd like to see a heatsink as well, even with running smaller motors, not to mention larger ones. At least some type of Aluminum plate to at least spread the heat and allow the user to attach a heatsink if they want.
My vote is still with the MM. If only they could work out the "glitches" many have recently found...

Unless the price drops on the Tekin from what Tower has listed currently, I can't imagine it'll sell real well.
The listed prices right now are:
R1 - $195
R1 PRO - $225
R1 BL Combos - $275
R1 Pro BL Combos - $305
With those prices, I certainly won't be interested. However, the R1 Pro is spec'd for 14cells or 5S lipo:

WOW!
And is that with internal BEC or with an external BEC? The part where it says that the R1 Pro can handle up to 14 cells/5s lipos.

I'd bet that's with an external BEC. There's almost no way they could also fit a switching BEC into such a small package.

Well, it isn't REAL small like the Quantum series of controllers made by LRP- though they are made for brushed motors only.
If the R1 Pro is so expensive in comparison to the MambaMax, there's a possibility it could be more powerful. The only thing that is bugging me is the HEATSINK. Where's the heatsink?
Is it really that powerful that it doesn't need a heatsink?

IMO, all high power ESC need a heatsink. You can generally increase efficiency by using faster switching FETs. The heat comes from mostly the relatively small duration of time when the signal switches from on to off (and vice versa).
If you look at the output motor square wave pulses very carefully on a storage o-scope and zoom in, you would see that the square waves have a steep ramp up and down, but they are not perfectly straight. This ramp is where the power loss is. So, as long as switching speeds remain less than perfect, there should always be a heatsink to get rid of this excess heat.
An exception would be if there was a way to design the ESC where it could be filled with some type of epoxy-like material that is electrically insulative but thermally conductive. This would spread the heat out to the casing. But the casing should still be metal somewhere.
I still think they should at least supply a metal "slab" so the ESC is still small, but leaves the decision to add a sink to the user.

Yeah, but I once used a 7turn D5 motor in my touring car with a Futaba MC800C controller which was a Quantum based controller, and it had no heatsink, but after a full run, the thing was really cool and not even warm.
I'm sure it has something to do with the motors being from two different worlds, but it is nice to have something as small as a toe that can power up a very fast and -amp hungry- motor.

Well, on a brushed setup, there is only one "phase" working. On a BL setup, there are three phases working. That would equate to triple the pulses and also triple the heat. Also, a BL motor pulls more current than your typical single brushed motor setup so that also has something to do with it.

2 things on the r1 controllers.
1) It says that the r1-pro is 5s capable, but the hightest setting for the built in LVC is only 12.5V. They need a 15V setting for it to work with 5s. So for 5s you would still need an external LVC.
2) I talked to tekin about this esc at the ihobby show in chicago last month. A cool feature it has is a built in temperature monitor, Not just to shut it down if it reaches a high limit like most ESCs do. This one actually has the temp monitor dispaly a readout while in use to show how hot the esc is. It shows how hot it is by lighting diferent amounts of LEDs on the front of the esc while its in use. So you can just look through the window and get a good idea of how hot the esc is running. Cool feature IMO. Although without a heatsink, my suspision is it will be running hot most of the time. :002: Not likely this will be a viable 1/8 or MT esc like the MM is working out to be.
I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...
Silent...But Deadly

The other thing we should worry about is how smooth this esc is in comparison to the MambaMax.
