High Voltage

Anyone running a Castle Creations Phoenix HV (referred to has PHV from now on) in a 1/10th or 1/8th scale electric conversion?

I'll save you the time of asking why would I want to run a Airplane ESC in a car.

I have been reading the forum on and off try to decide what my next project should be. I was thinking about the G2R but now I have my mind on other things.

I have seen people have issues with 6S on the Quarks and 4 and 5S on the MM. Which made me start looking at other companies and controllers. BK ESCs are a lot of money even if they are one of the best. I would be interested in the Monster Max but after emailing Castle Creations and finding out the they are still in testing it's not an option right now. Which brings me to the PHV.

While on Castle's site I noticed the PHV are rated for up to 50v. Which kind of had some wow factor. Then the gears in my head started to turn even at 45amps that is 2250watts of power or about 3hp. The big 110amp PHV is 5500watts or 7.3hp.

The big BKs are 5200watts or less and the MGM is around 4600watts. And they are $350-500 compared to the $270 for the 110PHV or less for the 85 and 45 versions.

It might not have all the features you would want/need for a car/truck but for the price I can deal with it. The main problems are solved by using a nitro converted electric truck (brakes).

I know not totally nuts because I did find out a speed record RC used a PHV. I'm not planning on speed records but I do like the idea of using one.

High voltage is suppose to be more efficient with less heat and line loss then high amps low volts. So high voltage ESC with a low Kv high turn motor should work. Have any ideas or suggestions, comments?

the reason people run them are they handle high voltage easily but don't have brakes, so you must use a mech. brake.. hope this helps..
