I always err on the side of caution. Sometimes, it's better to be patient and do it right or you'll end up spending more money than you need to.

Something else to mention: I would make sure the motor you have is OK too. Running a bad motor on a good ESC can turn it into a bad ESC pretty quick.

Unfortuntely, it tough to test a motor with normal test equiment since the resistance of the windings is so low. You can measure the resistance of each winding to the can itself and should get an infinite reading. Also, you can measure the resistance of each winding just to see if any coil is open (burnt out). All coil resistance measurements should appear close to 0 ohms. If you have access to a conductance meter, you could measure each winding to make sure they are all the same.
