Ahh! Reverse Treads?!!?

I was turning the nut to remove the wheels, but it wouldnt come out. So i spent a good couple of hours soaking the nut in acetone because i thought the guy glued the rims to the car. I had a similiar problem in 2 other tires on another savage. (i purchased them from same buyer). It was still stuck, so i turned and turned and turned, and than i hear teh fatal "SNAP". The nut with the protruding part broke off completley. So i tried to break the nut on the other ones buy dremelling the nut out. Anyway, eventualy when my dad try to get it out, he dsicovered it would loosen whiel turning RIGHT. WHY WOULD THEY EVER MAKE REVERSE TREADS! :035: :035: :035: What purpose are they for? You have to purchase special nuts too

I think there supposed to stop the wheel nut from coming loose.
The way the wheel turns while driving should tighten the nut instead of loosening. That's why it's only on one side off the car.
I've never had a problem with standard thread nut's on my cars though.

I could be worse though, 2 other apprentices at work snapped a turbo impeller shaft, because off reverse thread.

Yeah, that actually makes sense really, except the nuts on the right wheels should use the regular threads. When the tires spin, the wheel nuts on the left side tend to loosen because that it the way the wheels are turning. Using reverse thread makes the nuts tighten instead. The wheels on the right actually tighten the nuts when spinning.

Not be mean, but did you even try turning it 'the other way' just to check? I always seem to be forgeting which way is tighten/loosen, so I try it both ways until it does what I want it to!

I think i did, but i probbably didn't turn it enough to notice it was reverse. I never known they had a reverse!

The manufacturers do these things just to catch us out, I swear. Its all good fun.....

there aer/were a few full size auto makers that used left handed threads on the left side of the car. dodge had it on the 70-74 Darts with the 340/360 in it. (A body).
some of the race cars I crewed on were the same way also.
makes sense in a way if you think about it.

I wish the revo's were that way, new nuts, red loctite, whatever they always come loose
