As far as the thermaling issue - it should actually stop the delivery of power when the internals reach thermal temps - before using fans mine did - as far as the heatsink - i can tell you that the aluminum plate you mentioned, imho, will need more fins that the heat can transform into - and the more fins - the more air passing between the fins will dissapate much more heat than the type that you described - you could get the heastink that mike offers and choose to arctic silver the quark to it - without fans - and try it out - worst case senario - get a couple of fans for it....
