How much better is MM motor vs. Feigao? -
03.06.2008, 06:38 PM
Looking for some opinons here....
I just got one of these off ebay for $92.
http://www.cenracing.com/censports/me16ry.html
Its really just something to goof off with and I dont really expect much out of it, but... They call it a 1/16th mini, but now that I see it in real life, it really isnt very mini at all. Its just about exactly 4lbs out of the box RTR with stick pack. Thats heavier than 1/10 race vehicles. Anyway it takes regular size electronincs, so 540 size motor and regular size servo. The whole thing feels pretty beefy to so it should take some abuse, metel diff gears and drive shafts so it should withstand the brushless power OK too. (I hope)
Anyway... the point of the post is, I have a sidewinder ESC here that I am planning to use and I need a motor for it... I am trying to decide between the MM 4600 or the Feigao 540-8s (4436kv). The MM is around $75 (with 25%off sale) and the Feigao is $49. Is the MM worth 50% more?
I am planning to run it just on 2s 90% of the time, but throw 3s in it just to laugh at it once in a while.
What do you guys think? Looking for some opinions for someone with experience with the MM motors. I have never actually owned one of the motors. Just the MM ESC.
I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

The sidewinder may not be able to handle the feigao 8s, as it uses more power than a 5700 which is the limit. kvs are misleading when comparing motors with different size rotors. You could gear the 8s the same as you would gear a 4600 for the same top speed, but the 4600 would still be more efficent. Although you can argue that you would get more torque out of an 8s that way, why not get a 5700 and gear it down to get that torque.

I dont want the 5700 cuz I do want to be able to run 3s on occasion. So your saying the MM motor isnt a 36mm motor? I always assumed it was.
EDIT: OK I see. I never bothered to look up the length of the MM. Its the same diameter, just 7mm shorter.
I can't decide if its more fun

Hey Jeff,
I would say to go with the 8s feigao. I have found that the mm motors are only good for lighter weight 2wd 10th scale vehicles. The Feigao s can motors can draw some power, but should run cooler on the load you have.
I know that rchippie runs a 7s motor on 2s lipo in a crt.5 (I sold it to him!) and likes it. Seeing that thew Cen vehicle is rather heavy the 8s would be a good choice, for 3s lipo.
I have had all of the mm motors, and think that they are overpriced, but they do sell well, most likely due to people knowing no better! So I have sold all of them!

I have the 8s and love it. I bash and dragraced with it last year. Way more torque then the mamba motors. The only thing I didn't like was the endbell falling off, which was fixed with Mike's monster heatsink. I bash with 3s2p A123 and dragraced it last year with 6s1p A123. The motor is still kicking butt.

That's the one thing that keeps me away from putting a fiegao in my T4, the endbell problem. A 10S would be a great motor for running 3S A123 in there, I'd be able to get back to more normal gearing, but $50 for the motor + $25 for the heatsink/clamp = no price advantage. If I could trust that it would stay attached by itself with bashing, I might be tempted, but I know it won't.

I was under the impression that the fiegao motors were of higher quality that the CC motors. I understand the end bell problem, but other than that arn't they better?
I've only had the CC-5700 and an Ammo 36-50-2300 so far but I've just burnt up the CC doing speed runs on 3S (first time slacking on watching the heat :( ) so eventually I'll be going after a motor in the 4600KV range.
I'm running them in a XXXT and an Academy SB-V2 Pro which has very little air flow, so heat in the buggy is a big issue. I'll be running it on 3S with a modded MM.I'll use 3S, 4S, and 5S with the 2300KV I already have. I just want the ~4600KV for speed runs and hyper bashing...
Is there a shorter (than 50mm) can motor that will take the SB-V2 to 50+mph on 3S without major heat problems? For less than $100?
EDIT: The SB-V2 Pro is 3.5 pounds, 4WD, the diffs are 2.3:1 ratio, spur & pinion are 48p 46-52 tooth and will fit 15-26 tooth pinion gears.
If I could only draw what I see in my head, then afford to build it, and finaly get to play with it...

Dr Know, one of the smaller mega motors may work well for you. I do not know if you can get them with an 1/8 shaft, which may cause problems.
Or a neu 1506, but that would be a little over 100 bucks!

Just buy a Velineon motor then. It's basically a 10S. And it will stay together for bashing without a clamp/heatsink.

Ah. That's a good idea. :) Of course then there's the issue of the V being better than the M, which I don't remember if it was really concretely proven or not...

I think a MM ESC paired with a Velineon motor would be quite a nice pair, especially if you ever wanted to get crazy and run 4S.

Linkpimp, the Ammo was 5mm shaft too but a little dremmel time has it at a real nice 3.2mm now, so other than a tossed warranty I don't mind changing the shaft size...
Looks like I'll be looking into the mega and velineon motors. They are better than the feigao's?

Have to remember that the velineon can only run 50k rpms because of the bigger rotor.
