Sidewinder on 4s? - 03.30.2008, 11:43 PM

So I have a pair of Sidewinders and wonder how they would do on 4s.

I know that I would need a ubec. This would be in a crt.5 or LS10. Just woundering how it go.

I know JRH ran one on 4s, but I do not know his setup.

Any info?

I gotta imagine it would work, but you just dont know util you try. I was actually wondering about 5s, but I have no idea what caps are inside. I would bet that 4s WIll work w/ a UBEC. I have been running one on 3s and I think I am going to put a UBEC on it to help it stay cool. It gets kinda warm on 3s as it is.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

I ran mine on 4s with a hot little 2221-6 outrunner. The ESC ran hot, but it was the amp draw I am sure. An external BEC is a must, but with a slow enough motor or low enough gearing it should work just fine.

Did you ever get around to it?

I will say that I had a Sidewinder in my crawler running 3S and a 55t integy and I had to use a cbec because it (bec) thermalled when I twitched the servo back and forth fast. I never had a problem in my b44 or j82, so thought it odd. at first I thought I had a bad servo, I plugged another in and tried unloaded and no problem. got all hooked up, glitched again. I tried a different rx, same deal. man I was getting choked so I grabbed the bec out of my rc8 and there it was. I was running 2s at first but the 55 was way to slow.
I've since traded the sw and bec for an original novak crawler system. on 2s it has plenty of wheel speed and I can mount the little 2s on the front axle. the 3s had to sit on a plate sitting on the top links.

I'd be interested to know if it will survive 4s. I kind of think that is pushing it unless it has a low enough kv motor.

You were just overamping the internal BEC with the servo. Crawling is about the most stress you can put on a BEC an servo.

My 5 pound comp rig is running a 5955 servo on 2.2 tires. After a 4 minute run my servo case was at 140F running on 6v.

oh I understand that much but that was just wiggling the wheels while the truck was standing still. I have a novak crawler system now and was running around using the internal bec and 4ws. don't get me wrong, I love Castle stuff but the sidewinder sure has a weak bec

I am still curious about trying things and this thread interested me to see how it worked out. pushing limits is fun. just tossing out my 2 bits to keep it alive to hear a few more bits.

i was wondering if this would be a good choice for a reedy 3 star motor on 2s, how low can we go without it burning up? could it survive 4s with the same motor and ubec, cap and fan??? in a touring car... its $50 cheaper than the mamba max

What is the kv on the 3 star? I have run my sidewinder on 3s with a pretty powerful aveox in a pede. It did get warm, but did just fine with the slotted stator motor...
