Bulletproof revo tranny? -
04.26.2008, 09:24 PM
Do they make metal gears for the revo tranny?
I'm having problems keeping this thing running, first it was a burnt up spur, then a gear exploded in the tranny, now I got a knock in the tranny like something it bouncing around in there.

Robinson Racing makes internal tranny gear for the Revo. Be ready to shell out some change to get the whole set though...

I'm look at this .. This is the output gear isn't it? And I just ordered a center diff., the center diff. replaces this output shaft, I think, does this mean I'm going to be burning up center diffs?
Any ideas on why this keeps happening?
It seems to happen after high speed runs, only other thing I can think of is my remote antenna is bent and its making the car twitch and sometimes stop a quick, but it didnt seem to do that right before it broke, but I could of just not noticed.

I know plastic gears arent supposed to need grease, but if you say its happening after high speed runs, it could possibly be building up heat and softening the plastic allowing it to strip more easily. A light coat of grease on the gears might help prevent the friction that builds heat.
Dont know if this is actually the case, just a theory to throw out there.
I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

if you are going to install the CD do the FOC while you have the tranny open, it will simplify things and locking the tranny in 2nd gear will help also

Well good to here that it seems to get stronger with the FOC and diff.. I have them both ordered.
What else do you guys break, and should I consider upgrading? We mentioned the little pins on the gear shafts.....
How about the front and rear diffs?

what jhautz said. Weird you strip them though, are you super meticulous dis/assembling the tranny cleanly? if you got the slightest bit of grit in there it could cause havok. The white two spead gear looks very dirty, I took mine apart to do the FOC and everything was still very clean white. You should kept it sealed from dirt!

That looks like one of the reverse gears, which are notoriously weak. I would suggest installing the FOC and/or the center diff. I run stock FOC gears and they hold up fine - the only thing I blow is the little pins holding the gears to the shafts (but that's taken care of now).

Same here. FOC gears hold up great for me, and I've only broke one of the pins once. But I replaced it with a much thicker one, and now its even stronger.

The R/R diffs are definitely another weak spot, but you can attack that in two ways depending on your budget:
1: Cheap. Just get a set of aluminum cups. This prevents cup flexing, which is what causes bad meshing and stripping in the spider gears. Still, there are only 2 spider gears so they will wear out over time, but they will last a lot longer.
2: Expensive. Get the Revo hybrid units Mikes sells. They use 4 spider gears so will last a lot longer.
In either case, make sure to shim the ring/pinion gear so they are perfect.

Hello,
(added to this thread instead of starting a new one, as Sammus mentionned it)
I'm doing the "locking in 2nd speed" mod right now and my gears are getting dirty.
Any tricks on how to get those gears cleaned up?
Thanks
Loa

Toothbrush and some sort of cleaner, like simple green? The wash them and blow them off! (the last sentence was related to the gears, not body parts)

Hello.
Thanks. I cleaned them (the gears!) with a scott towels and finished the job with compressed air. They looked like new!
