EVX Handle 16 cells? - 09.25.2005, 05:05 PM

I'm very tempted to buy an Emaxx (again), but I can't afford a new brushless ESC and motor for it as well at the min so I was wondering if I could use my current 8 cell matched batteries (GP3300 cells) with the EVX controller? 16 cells even with brushed should make one fly, if the controller won't blow..

I've pushed other ESC's past what they're rated to in the past, but with a heavy car like an Emaxx I'm not so sure, although I would be running more gear reduction, and a fan on the controller. Anyone tried it before? Or am I just going to let the magic smoke out the ESC if I try?

Cheers.

I believe people have run the EVX on 16cells before, the weak point is the titans.....they have a tendancy to blow up. If you want a bit more power but can't afford brushless, may I suggest Dan at www.kershawdesigns.com . They have some very nice 'pre-brushless' upgrade kits. Personally I'd just save up for brushless.....

Thats the thing, I don't want to spend money on brushed kit because it'll be going brushless in not too long, but I only have $300 or so to spend at the min. Would the titans work if I geared a lot lower? Problem is I don't want to reconfigure the batteries as 6 or 7 cell packs because I use them in my T2 as 8 cell side-by-side packs.

My current brushless ESC will only handle 12 cells/4s lipo unfortunately. The only motor I have I could run on 12 cells is a 380 size which is about useless in a truck.

U could give it a go, as long as you gear down a bit and keep a constant watch on their temps. But I have never done this so I can't give you honest advice. Check the traxxas forums, I know there are people on there that have run 15/16cells on the EVX

Just wish the Titans happy spinning! Gearing down might only make them last a little bit longer, but it should make the EVX more capable of handling the 16 cells (because the amp draw would be lower).

I plan to put a DeWalt 820 9.6v motor in my Twin Force and run it off my EVX, don't s'pose it'd still be able to run 16 cells on that motor, would it? Not sure why I even ask, I only have one 8 cell pack. :)

My first EVX smoked on 14 cells and gets very hot with my current one.

Even if you did manage 16 cells it would run awful from the constant heat problems. Really not worth it.

Yeah, that's kinda what I figured. I just saw that the other guy would probably be okay pushing the limits of his, and wondered if I could do the same.

I have been running my EVX on 14 GP3300 since new (about 3 months).
EVX gets a bit hot, but I added fans this weekend to try to get the temps down. The Titans get very warm/hot!

loading it with 14 cells allready is hard on the evx, so i would personally not push it beyond its limits..!

I don't fancy frying another ESC so I'll play it safe and just not use the Emaxx till I put brushless in it (or run my el cheapo 3000 packs in it, although I doubt it'll do them any good pushing a heavy car).

Thanks for the advice guys!

I know how you an run 18 cells on the EVX.. I've done it...
those two connectors for the batteries.. one of them is connected to the BEC, and the other is not...

use a regular 7.2Volt, and test it on either one of the battery connecter.. if it lights up, then this is the one where you want to use 6 cells....

Let me try sticking 2 3s lipo packs on it.. I have an evx on my 4x4 Rusty.. if I fry it.. I don't care... it's in the name of RC.. if it works.. I'll take a pic I'll be back in a couple of minutes... I don't want to give you advice that'll blow up ur ESC.. so I'll take a risc of blowin' up mine..

or

this way, you'll have no reverse...

Stick the regular 2 packs of 6 cells on the ESC.. and where the esc connects to the motor... stick another 6 cell pack directly to the motor... black wire on negative. red wire on positive.. this will work too.. but you're titan will probably fry.. :)

I have put 18cells on a novak hv maxx. It ran just not will. Did n't do it long. It would cut out if you pulled the trigger fast. What if you put an extrenal pack or bec and wire it up with 2 wires instead of 4 like they have it.

Peace!

For informational purposes only, no guarantees and i wouldn't do it myself. Couldn't do link but go to rctech forums and search emaxx or evx. There is a short thread about this subject. I hope this helps

Work because i gotta, play because i wanna

People here hate Nitro, I love it. I start it, run it about 50 ft from me and it dies, I go after it. Perfect exercise
