Post Losi Speed-T vs Traxxas VXL Rustler - 06.20.2008, 10:14 PM

Trying to decide between a Losi Speed-T and Traxxas VXL Rustler. Leaning more towards the Losi as for $30 extra you get Spektrum Radio, Threaded Aluminum Shocks and a 4800KV motor which will go faster than the VXL motor on 6-7 cell batteries. I can't remember but I think I read somewhere about alot of guys having trouble with the Speed-T transmission. Anyone heard abou this?

I don't know what the Losi does on 6-7cell NiMh, but the stock VXL Rustler does 41mph on my 2S Lipo and stock gearing.

I would go with the Traxxasvxl rustler. I blew the doors off of a speedt on 3s at take off, the speed t seemed lighter on the front end, (wobbles on wheelie) and makes it hard to take off. I did 68mph and speed t went 65mph. The traxxas also holds up better.

You need to realize that your gonna need to spend more money to get rid of the pitiful tires on the speed-t. Also, you can get $25 off the Rustler VXL at Tower. And as far as the Speed-t being faster, I doubt it. The Velineon motor is bigger than your standard S-size motor. 54mm long rather than 48mm. Adds a lot of torque to it. This means you can gear it higher and go faster even with the lower RPM of the motor.
I got two Mamba max 4600 motors and they didn't even come close to the power output of the Velineon with all of them on 3s because of the limited gearing for the smaller motors.

traxxas is waaay more tougher, the only thing i broke on the rusty was my bellcranks and stripped the idler, but the VXL has a alum. idler.

The Rustler for sure and get the FLM adj. front shock tower from Mike for $15 and a RPM bumper $9 and you are set for awhile.

Actually the length difference of the can is for the internal solder plate.

The magnet is slightly longer on the velineon compared to the cc motors. I compared a velineon to a s can feigao, and the feigao ran cooler and could pull a higher gear, plus appeared to be more effecient. This may have something to do with the fact I ran the feigao with a mm and the vel was with the vel esc. The mm is a much superior esc. I am sure that the vel fares better than a cc motor due to its lower kv. The internals of both are virtually identical, while the s can feigao has a longer magnet and winding.

I would also go with the rusty over the speed t. The rusty platform is much stronger than the xxx-t platform, and the tranny is way tougher. Not really sure what the speed t is for, I guess losi fans??

I vote Speed-T: Higher KV, better quality motor, wheelie bar, street tires (rustler ones are for dirt), locked diff (better high-speed handling), spektrum, better shocks, better handling truck. Why not?

You may be suprised to find who makes the losi motor...

And higher kv does not make it better. The motors are of similar size, so they will be capable of similar power numbers. The higher kv motor will require less volts, and more amps (thus needing a higher quality battery to perform well), and lower gearing to survive. Plus bearing are only so good...

Who makes the Losi motor? Is it Feigao like the Velineons?

Who else makes motors? I do not think that it is a neu!!!!

Feiago makes most of the mass produced motors. The cc motors are made by someone else though. Unless it is a neu or lehner, I have had a hard time finding a motor that is better than a feigao 540 s can. especially for 50 bucks. I also like the 380c feigao l can motors, they seem to be perfect for 10th scale 2wd.

yeah plasitc on the rustler, the losi has nicer ones...you can get "traxxas big bores" for the rustler pn# 2660 and 2662 and integy has a set with a variety of springs to fit the xxlong rear and long fronts. link they are a tad bit short in the front but you can use a spacer

Yeah, the Losi comes with aluminum threaded shocks and Losi shocks are one of the best on the market
