What's the deal? - 09.28.2005, 03:43 AM

Found this goodie on ebay while wasting some time, caught my eye. I've read the specs, and have come up with that it's a car controller, so what's the drawback? I mean, what is the difference between one of these and a MGM 80a, aside from the 20a less and $50 price tag? I'd be willing to try one out with a Feigao 380C-7T in my T2 to replace my Lehner 5300/7018 system that's showing its age, maybe even use it with a bigger motor if I know it'd be okay......even at $50, I'd rather not waste it on something I'll just throw away.

I also remember seeing 80a ones a while ago, can't really find those now, would they be any better?

Your link doesn't work. But I am assuming it is one of those off-brand "car" controllers.

These aren't good usually because they are just modified airplane controllers. They still have soft start like airplanes, which could cause cogging when used in a car. They are also not as smooth, and more likely to burn out from the high bursts encountered in cars.

Are you talking about those 60A TowerPro ESCS?....

I bought one of those just to test.. but I think they're for planes... and aren't that great quality... I just bought one for the hell of it...

The best controller to drop in a car, are car controllers or boat controllers. With the boat setup it was even more agresive.

Okay, I can't get the blasted links to work, don't know why they keep dying. But yes, it's the "Tower Pro 60A ESC for Brushless", and I find it easily by doing a search for "brushless controller".

So you're saying it'd be trash, not even worth the $50? aqwut, how did your's fare, and what'd you use it with? I might be willing to try it out too just for the heck of it, wouldn't have real high expectations for it though. I'd only use it in my T2 because it's fairly light, and the stress wouldn't be as much.

So your small Lehner is getting old and grumpy? How does this show?

Was this the one in your good ol'Pede?

Daf, it might be the motor, it might be the controller, both have been though hell. I'd actually accuse the controller first, the shrink wrap kinda melted off when it thermalled and I crashed my Pede, so that's being held on with a zip tie. It's also got darn near ZERO visual asthetics, looks like crap because it kinda is. I'd be willing to try the cheapo controller with the Lehner to see if I can get some more life out of it, just run the T2 without a body so I can see if anything catches on fire or starts smoking. :D

Asian Man: I wanted to do that eventually anyway, but my surplus of cash has kinda dwindled, so it'd be a month away at the least. Besides, if this mad scientist plan works, I'll have saved like $150! If it dies......well, $50 isn't that bad, and you can hardly get brushed ESC's for that much! I'll be sure to "document it" on video, just in case anything goes horribly wrong!

I bought it, just to check it out... and if it didn't work out... I was goin' to use it for my boat.... :)

So it's goin' into the boat.... you know.. it was $50, it takes 60 amps.. good for the boat...

to use this esc.. you'd have to be pretty good.. you have to have your trigger on FULL brakes at all times... you move forward, you'd have to let the brake loose a little bit... so it's opposite of what we're use to running.... and there's no reverse... I tried this ESC on my Heavy E-maxx.... It handled it pretty well.. although it was only a basic 4200 on it.. :) but I was expecting that esc to fry on the first pack.. it didn't.. but there's no way you can use this esc on a car......

Just to tack onto aqwut's post, the reason why you have to have full brake on all the time is because it is an airplane controller. With airplanes, the neutral point on the radio is when the stick is all the way down. That is like full reverse on a pistol radio... So, that's why it wouldn't be worth it :).

That's right Metalman... But I was really suprise that ESC didn't fry... for being how cheap it is... I could use it in a car, but it would take a little gettin' use to.... Too bad there's no way you can change the neutral point.... :) or else it wouldn't be suck a bad ESC....

Because I use to have a Hacker 125 F something....
It was a little bit different.... on neutral, it was brakes.... It was actually a pretty good ESC.. it never got really warm... and it was cheap... The only thing you had to becareful of was easing off the throttle when coming to a stop....

Maybe when you program it, is there a way to set the neutral, or is it Tekin style and you make your stuff work according to their setup?

The odd throttle would sure be strange.......my bro has a 4 ch. airplane controller though, wonder how hard it'd be to use it with that radio and try to drive with dual sticks? It'd almost rationalize getting it, but driving would still be hard. But darn that $50 price!

EDIT: I just can't stay away from these things, found another one, maybe more promising. This new one mentions that it has reverse, which makes it more appealing for a car application, or is it set up like the Tower one and not worth the hassle? I think I have a problem! :W: :L:

BTW, it's the RC Smart 60a one found in this search.
