Tell me what i need to do??? - 07.20.2008, 09:34 AM

OK after racing the xray last night with this setup right here : Mod1 MM w/30mm novak fan, 10xl, 5s 5000 flightpower geared for 43 mph. i was completely impressed i had the brakes working excellent and i ended up qualifing 4th in the expert buggy (this was my first 1/8th scale race in 8 years ) I didnt have any problems in the qualifiers as they were only 5 minutes long my temps of those 3 were: esc-145, motor 155, battery- 115. Now when we got to the 20 minute main i was worried so i really took it easy and just drove as smooth as possible, i pitted at 12 minute in for temp and the esc-165 (with fan rolling) and the motor was 175, battery -115. at 2 minutes left in the race the MM thermaled and shutdown left me stranded luckly i was far enough ahead of 3rd to hold on to my 2nd place for the evening ( not bad for the first time i ever even drove the buggy 2nd out of 12 in the expert class)
the turn marshall brought it in and i yanked the body off afap and the esc read-185, the 10xl was 187, lipo was 115.

SO tell me guys what do i gotta do to make the 20 minute main???? it was embarrassing having it crap out on me right at the end while i was reeling in the leader so what kinda setup can i put in this thing and make the main and KEEP my temps UNDER 165 all around.

the track is notorious for being extremely hard on gas motors since prolly 15 secs of your 45 sec lap in wide open or close to it, while the rest is VERY tight and technical.

help me out here i thought i would be good running the 5s and 10xl in the little buggy since itd be quite over powered i thought i would have better temps and runtimes over a 4s setup. so what am i gonna have to do?????

ive got 3 weeks to get this thing to where it can run 20 minute mains and then we are having a BIG race where twice as many people show up .

what are you ESC settings?Have you checked for any drivetrain drag? What is your gearing? What was the outside temprature?

IT was about 90* outside with 90% humidity, The drivetrain is SMOOTH as butter and gear mesh is perfect, im geared 17/46 for 43mph with 5% loss, esc settings are:

lowest timing
high start power
70%punch control (still WAY TOO fast)
50% brakes (which get used ALOT in the race)
16.5v cutoff

I would try lowering your pinion size, lowering the start power, and instead of using punch control I go into the CC program and adjust the throttle curve, I am not impressed with the punch control

i did lower the pinion during practice to the next higest i had the motor was running pretty hot esc was slightly cooler but the motor was touching 180 in within 10 mins.

i do have a different brake and throttle curves on there but the punch control helps me ALOT in technical sections.

as for the start power i thought temps would be better running a high start power the reduce the load right off on the start on the controler, i guess im wrong on this.

by lowering the pinion to the next highest does that mean you went bigger or smaller on the pinion

i went from the 17 pinion too a 15 pinion which the speed clac puts me at 38mph with the 15 instead of 43 mph with the 17 tooth

i will try lowering the start power and ditching the punch control on the mm, ill also try gearing down to 38mph (15 tooth) and see how this combo of changes works, if this doesnt do it would a better motor such as a Nue 1512 3D be easier or harder on the MM i know the temps should be better on the nue over the xl but would it be enough to gear down enough to where i could keep the mm undercontrol?

would a 1515 2.5D be better on temps? over the 1512 3D or the 10xl??? i know itd have the torque to pull a train but i just want LOW temps and somthing to last a long time.
