Argh!!!!!! - 08.16.2008, 01:40 AM

Not sure if I should put this thread in this forum, but since it's sorta on topic, here goes:

I think everyone knows me and my story at this point! With that in mind, I decided to do a little troubleshooting. So I hooked up my Rx and steering servo only, and plugged in a battery pack. Much to my surprise, within seconds of doing this, my $125 digital servo became RED HOT, and started melting!!! WTF! Will it ever end??? I have no idea why, but one of the little chips on the board is bad apparently, and when it sees a battery, it just starts frying itself. Of course, it's no longer under warranty. SUCKS!!

I also checked to see if my motor screws were too long (I have digital calipers), and they're not. Nope, no shorts here, they're actually the perfect length; they go about 3.04mm into the motor case. Perfect. I knew I checked this before.

So, MMMv2 #3 (that's 4 MMM's total) arrived today, and a few minutes ago, I finished hooking everything up (had an extra servo laying around for steering, but WAY underpowered for this application). Much to my surprise, IT WORKS!!!! :y ipi:

Yes, I calibrated it, and not only did I get to mount the wheels and pull the trigger for the very first time, but I drove my Muggy around the house!!! It really, truly WORKS!!! Tomorrow can't come fast enough!!!

I'll keep everyone posted in the brushless forum. Hopefully, it will be ONLY good news, and NOT another broken high dollar component. Under warranty or not!

THANK YOU PATRICK!!!!

Remind me again, was this (bad) servo connected to the Rx when you tried calibrating/ setting up all your previous MMMs?

Hmm, this very well could explain your past troubles mk351e. For a servo to get that hot it has to be drawing a ton of current from the BEC. Sounds like hooking up that battery pack just saved your 4th MMM from getting fried. I would open up your RX & make sure there is no damage there even thou it is still working, all that current went thru the power trace on the RX's board. I also would inspect the wires on the back you were using when the servo fried, they should have gotten very hot as well.

I can't remember, are you the person that Patrick said not to use the no-spark resistor?

Glad to hear you got it sorted out! Must have been getting aggravating!

What I usually do to check motor screw length is this: With the motor unmounted, manually (with my fingers), slowly, and gently turn the motor screws into the motor until I feel it touch the coils. Mark the threads. Remove the screw and measure how far it went. Then, I subtract a mm or so for a safety margin. Now you know the exact depth!

Good (for us) to know it wasn't the fault of the Monster. $125 for a servo that crap's out on you isn't cool. I would still see if they might warrenty it. It is rated for 6v right? If you have to replace it, these have always done the trick for me and priced right that you can have a spare or two on hand. If you're really strapped for cash (or for that project you don't want to sink a bunch money into right away) these will do the trick but have been known to oscilate a little when returning to nuetral.

Bingo (from the other thread):

Well, thats another mystery solved. Seems like the bad servo, although it works, was pulling a ton of amps from the MMM's BEC, which caused it to pop each time. I like happy endings....

Does that mean there are only 2 MMM failures now?

iv been thinking. could this be due too the V1 MMM frying?

when it blew it took some servos with it? I know the CC BEC does that sometimes
