MMM vs Xcelorin 1/8 - 10.19.2008, 12:02 PM

Guys, although the xcelorin 1/8 hasn't been out for long has anyone ever had the chance to compare the two side-by-side? Feature wise I've been examining both. The xcelorin looks very promising on paper

I've pasted some technical specs taken from each manufacturer's site:

MMM

Cells: 6s LiPo
Resistance: 0.0003 ohms per phase
Brake: Proportional with adjustable curve
Reversible: Yes - with lockout
Cooling fan
Programmable via PC
Dimensions: 2.2" x 1.9" x 1.4"
Weight w/Wires: ESC: 121g
Connector Type: 6.5mm bullet

1/8 Xcelorin

160A continuous current with 800A peak
Prewired Losi EC5 power connector
Accommodates a 3s-5s-cell LiPo
Cooling fan
Optimized for Spektrum or legacy radio systems
Internal and programmable BEC
Forward/Brake with Reverse or Forward/Brake settings
Forward and reverse throttle limiting available
Four LEDs to indicate functions
Three preset drive profiles: 3S, 4S and 5S
Programmable via PC and Programming Card
Includes three pre-programmed profiles for convenience
Adjust brake and throttle curve settings with the simple-to-use graphical interface software

Just a small footnote: Didn't see it on Castle's site but on Amainhobbies they rate the MMM at 'Continuous: 120 Amps'. Wonder if this is accurate?

The one thing the Xcelorin has over the MMM is its programming card.

As for comparing current ratings between the MMM and 1/8 Xcelorin, you can't really compare the numbers. I have no doubt that CC and Losi rate the ESCs differently, so IMO you'd have to do a real side-by-side comparison and measure temperatures to determine which ESC can handle more current.

Problem I have is that I haven't seen anyone who has a working Xcelorin yet, then only reports on here are of failures. Not that I am saying they all fail, it's just there haven't been any good reports.

Let's assume both esc's perform as intended. Looking at the spec sheet on both, I'd still go for a MMM because of 6s capability. Higher voltage = lower current draw for the same power output and less energy wasted in heat loss.

I believe the xcelorin may have an advantage over the MMM in terms of higher Amp ratings - provided that the numbers on the MMM are correct.

I agree to some extent with MetalMan a comparison out on the field and some graphs to show at the end of the day would be more accurate.

There are a couple of recent positive reports on rctech about the Losi esc. Not sure if they are biased toward's losi but here is a link to one of them (post #305).

I thought the Mamba was rated for 200 amps continuous?

Ratings are arbitrary with controllers. The Novak HV is supposed to be like 400 amp continuous or thereabouts, yeah right!

The xcelorin may be able to handle 6s. It's probably just rated lower because they had a <100% success rate running 6s.

God, how much money do you have to spend on RC?

Calm down Mike, you have buy 6 MMM and 5 of it is at Castle for repair, so let the Losi where it is, and wait for your MMM.
Or return with nitro, i think that for you, nitro would be wayyyyyyyyyyy more reliable
