Hello all,
I have taken the plunge and am converting my Savage to brushless. I have purchased the FLM forward conversion (on its way) and I am going to buy the MMM ESC.
The problem I have is that I can not figure out which motor to get. I will only be bashing around and do not need huge speeds. 40MPH would be just fine. Have not picked out LIPO's yet but will probably go with Zippy 5000 packs between 4s-6s.

I am leaning towards the Medusa motors. Should I go with 80mm or 70mm and what KV. I am totally new to this and have been reading for days.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't go wrong with the castle MMM 2200 combo, good for 4s to 6s. Welcome to RCM.

I would suggest the zippy 5000 6s lipos, 25c. As for a motor, a 70mm 1600kv medusa would be the best bet. The smaller diameter of the medusa vs the cc motor will help with gearing choices on that chassis, as the battery sits next to the motor.

Do you plan to leave the 2speed tranny and mech brakes?

...fyi i am using a 60mm 2200 Medusa with great joy :D But a 70 would be better...

I have a feeling your creation is a bit (no pun intended) lighter than a tranny forward savvy... I would almost suggest going up to an 80mm motor, but I doubt the lipos will handle that, plus he only wants 40mph.

...this is true...my medusa were originally planned for an e-savage which is even lighter again...The FLM chassis is pretty meaty anyway...

Thanks guys. I had been leaning towards the CC combo but just can't make up my mind. I am just looking for a stable platform to start out on. I have been running nitro for 4 years and up until now had no use for electric. Now that I have a Baja the nitro's are just not that fun anymore.

As for the 40MPH limit that is just a starting point for me. The Savvy will just be bashing around. Don't need land speed records and all.

So I think the choice is 70mm Medusa. Either the 1600Kv or 2000Kv. At the moment I am planning to leave the 2 speed in and go mechanical brakes. From what I have read the mechanical brakes would allow less stress on the motor. Is this correct? I would like to get the longest run time out of a 5000MAH pack as possible.

Also, would it be benificial to add a heatsink and or fan to the motor as well. Just trying to get the info so that I can order all this stuff today if possible.

Would have ordered it all with my FLM chassis but was testing the shipping here. Very impressed by it now.

Any other things I may need, let me know.

Well, made a decision. Going with HW 150A ESC and the Medusa 80mm. Just need to figure out what size Medusa and what gearing I should use for pinion and spur.
Would it be better to go with a steel spur or plastic.
Any thought.

a plastic spur is fine, if tou start breaking or melting them there is an issue elsewhere in your setup, I actually prefer the plastic spurs a little less heat and noise.

Ya thats what I thought. I have a but load of 47, 29 and 52T spurs. Have a 14 and 15 tooth mod 1 pinions right now. I guess will have to see what works best and go from there. May pick up some other ones when I order the motor.

If you still plan to run 6s lipo a 1600kv motor is the best bet. For 5s lipo a 2000kv motor is best. That gives you max motor rpm of around 35k. So gearing will be similar to the stock vehicle, as the nitro motors spin in the mid 30s max.

Start with the samller pinion and work your way up to the performance you want, and check your temps frequently. Tuning by temp is the best way to get a well preforming setup!

Yup, gonna go 6s. I was thinking only 4s due to my charger limitations but figured I would just get a new charger and go with 6s. Thanks for the help. Will be placing the order shortly.

My FLM chassis finally showed up. Have it built already. Now just have to wait for the rest of the parts to roll in. Gonna be fun for the next couple weeks. Only thing not shipped yet is the Medusa.
