Receiver mounting for less interference - please help - 05.07.2009, 11:43 PM

I am trying to figure out where the best place would be to mount my receiver on my Maxx. With the motor up front and in the middle, I was thinking of mounting it next to the motor opposite the steering servo. The motor wires are above the servo. Now with this setup, will I get alot of interference? And yes it is the stock TQ3 AM 27Mhz tx/rx, but I will probably be swapping in my JR XR2i Tx and Rx in a few days, which is still AM but its on the higher 75 MHz AM band. But even with the JR 75 MHz AM Rx, in that location will I still get alot of interference since it's right next to the motor?

Here is a picture -
(And yes I know it's covered in dirt.)

Thanks for any help.

If you could braid the motor to esc wires, that would help. I did that with my BL 18, and it helped quite a bit. Other then that spot you have it right now, i don't really see a better spot. Obviously you want it as far from the motor wires as possible, but I'd give that setup a shot. If that doesn't work, try that other radio, if that doesn't work, I'd look into cheap deals on the Traxxas 2.4ghz system. As you probably know, Fuse got one for $20.

I'd leave it where it is and test.

By braid them do you mean put that metal braided hose covering over them, because I have about 25 feet of various sizes of that stuff I could use? Or actually braid the wires like alot of people do to make the wiring look neat?

I would say that the actual braiding of the wires would help the most. The metal hose covering may also. Never used the metal hose covering, but I have had success and have heard of others having success with braiding the wires. I'm sure I will be dealing with the same issue when I attempt to run my Savage with AM...

Personally, I would go to an area you feel safe and test. An area with not much interferance, and maybe even a fail safe or something (not sure if you could use one with BL). I would test that metal tubing, you never know, it may work? It also looks sick.

I would also really take a look into some used Traxxas 2.4ghz deals. Or one pulled from the new E-revo BL. It seems to be a great radio, with built in fail safe, too.

Hmm. TBH, if you have enough wire to braid, you'd probably be better off simply shortening them. Less wire = less EMF. Depending on exactly where the noise is coming in, you can also try the following:

- Use a ferrite ring on the throttle cable. A couple turns should suffice.
- Use a 1000uf+ ~10v capacitor on an unused receiver port.
- Relocating the receiver/antenna as far from the motor wires as possible.
- Upgrading to 2.4 If a new system is a bit out of your price range, troll around here because people are always selling their older generation DX2/3/2.0/3.0 Spektrum systems.

As far as a braided coating, before you go out and buy something, you could try wrapping a layer of aluminum foil around the three wires and see if that helps. If it does, get some nicer/better actual braiding. If not, at least you didn't waste your money. Just be sure there are NO exposed wires/connections that could short against the motor wires.

Thanks Brian!

I will be swapping my JR XR2i setup into my Maxx, but the receiver only has a port for battery and 2 channels. I will need to run my lightkit off the battery port, so that leaves no extra channel for a capacitor. But do you think it would be ok to use one of these - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXNRE0&P=7 - on a Y harness with my lightkit on the battery port? Or would it even work that well(I can't find the ratings on it)?

And this is the metal braided hose covering I have - http://www.action-electronics.com/braid.htm

I may also go 2.4 GHz, any suggestions/opinions on a good system out there with some programmability? (Like the Spektrum, Airtronics, and Futaba systems) I just sold my crawler so I have some extra RC money to use to get a good radio system.

Just wire the capacitor in parralel off the LED connector.

I had no idea Tower was coming out with 2.4ghz. Nice find, might want to pick one up...

Chris - Both the tower setup, and the traxxas ones look to be very basic. Would have to spend more in the $170 mark for something as programmable as a Spektrum. I loved my Futaba 3pm 2.4ghz. $190 I think... But very nice.

Who cares about how much it can do. if they are 2.4ghz it fixes his problem.

I personally picked up my M8 for 50 bucks and the spectrum module was another 50.

I don't. I am actually very interested in one of those two cheap systems.

He did say he wanted more features. But for only $70, I would definately say it would be worth his while.

And if you have more than one model, I would recommend getting a radio with multiple model memories so all you need to buy are more receivers. IIRC, the Spektrum DX3s has 10 model memory, but I do know that the DX3r has 30 model memory. You can probably get the older DX3.0 or 2.0 for a good price since they are older models, but they have fewer model memories.

Well since I sold my crawler I have some extra money to get a higher end system, however I would like to get something below Amain's or Tower's price, so I will probably get a used DX2.0 or a DX3.0, but first I will see how this JR system works out.

I can also mount my receiver behind and below the ESC, but the batteries/battery wires will be right back there, but it will be about 4 or 5 inches away from the motor. Would the battery wires cause any kind of interference?

Just thought of this, I could move the ESC to be next to the motor and put the receiver in the back or on the CD mount, but then my problem would be the battery wires going over or under the motor, which I am not a very big fan of that idea, but it would lower my COG, too. Another problem would be the MMM would get bombarded by dirt from the front right wheel even with the body on, could probably make some kind of guard.

Stole my idea- stick the esc next to the motor where the rx is (rotate the motor 180* so the wires are on the same side as the esc), and stick the rx on the cd mount or ontop the servo maybe, that bwould be much better. A bit of scrap pop-bottle around the esc would deflect any dirt quite well, even if it looks a bit hack.
