what causes my spur to be swiggly?

this is for the rustler vxl. what i mean by swiggly is, when i give the truck some throttle, if you look at the spur meshing with the pinion gear, it looks like a snake. so the mesh is moving from left to right.
the spur does not wobble though. and i changed out the bearing that goes inside the spur. is it the bearings inside the tranny that i need to change, or is it the shaft where the spur goes onto bent????

and should i even worry about this? 2 spurs have been shredded within minutes, would this be the cause of this, or did i just do a bad mesh job? but the funny thing is, when i switched to a bigger pinion, the spur is not getting shredded. (but its still wiggly)

On a VXL, a wobbly spur is most likely a cracked plate that spur gear holds on to, or a bent input shaft.

Could also be screwed down slightly unevenly.

nope, no cracked plate. is that input shaft that shaft where the spur goes onto?

Yes, the spur is attached to the input shaft. When it is spinning, does the shaft wobble at all?

If the Rustler VXL is anything like the Slash (and I believe it is), the spur is held on with 3 screws. If you screw them in fully one at a time, it can cause the spur to be uneven. I usually put the spur on, tighten each screw finger tight. Then, in rotation, I screw each in a 1/2 turn until done.

Could also be the spring. Not much you can do about that though. How much is the wobble? My Slash spur deviates about 1/2mm as it spins, which is no big deal.

i think your right. i did what you said with the 3 screws and now it doesnt swiggle anymore haha. i guess i was tighting one screw at a time and it caused it to be off alignment.
Thanks! i didnt think it would matter since it was just screwing the spur onto the slipper.

since were on this topic, one of my slipper pads have a little piece broken off. i dont see any difference compared to a new slipper. so what are the downfalls of a piece broken off?

How much is a "little piece"? Downside is less contact area so you'll have to tighten it down more to get the same non-slip as a whole pad. Of course, this depends on how much is missing. Honestly, if it works fine and doesn't get hot, I'd say you're fine.

o ok , so those pads are there to hold it from slipping? so say if there was a big chunk missing from all 3 pads, even if i tighten it fully, the truck would still slip and wouldnt get that fast acceleration right.
is that how i can tell when i need to purchase new slipper pads?

I ran my rustler long and hard for about 2 years and the pads finally gave out with a vxl on 3s(a month of using this and the rest is racing 13.5). You should be ok with little chunks comming out but the real test is if it slips too much when you gas it hard you need new pads(unless your slipper is loose). Take a tiny bit of tooth paste and put it on the pads(on the side where it comes in contact with the plate) and rub a bit on the plate even too(not a lot at all). This will help with the life of the pads and prevent any unwanted slipping.

My spurs always warped on my Rustler VXL. To limit this happening, and to help longevity of gear life, switch to 32pitch / 0.8 pitch gearing. Spur from the Jato, and Pinion from the E-Maxx. That will definately help. The 42pitch gearing is way too small in my opinion for the power output of the VXL engines on lipo. Hope that helps.

that sounds like a very good idea. is this a mod? how would i go about doing the switch? do i just put a jato spur and thats its???

The Jato spur & Rustler VXL uses the same slipper design, its just the pitch is different as the Jato is Nitro (0.8 pitch = 32pitch), so thats a straight swap:

And the Emax pinion fits a 3mm shaft (as used on most 1/10th Engines) and is 32pitch.

This does however stop you running a gear cover on your diff, but you could probably make it fit, I didn't bother. I never had issues not running a gear cover.

I run 32 pich Jato gears on my Slash without a cover and it runs fine as well.
