First Electric Race - 09.13.2009, 12:37 PM

I have asked question and viewed hundreds of post in building my first electric conversion. I am going to wait on Mike to finish his MBX6-T kit for my first e-truggy.

I finally raced the Tekno D8 for the first time yesterday. I must say the power difference between the nitro and electric is second to none. Electric now electric forever!

The first heat with the buggy was just a shake down run since I didn’t have time to practice with the car. I was overshooting all of the jumps and the car was chassis slapping. I figured that maybe it was just me and I needed to come down and keep it slow. The temps on the system: MMM 130, CC/Neu 2200 120, 4S 90. I checked the car over and noticed that the electra clutch came loose and put a hole in the brake servo mount. It had loctite on it; I will check that every race from now on.

The second heat, I started to push the car a little more and the chassis slap was awful and it seems as though my skid plates where picking up dirt. I was traction rolling and I could not carry much speed into the corner. I was battling with a Losi 2.0e and corner to corner I was having a hard time catching him.

For the main I figured that the suspension on the car was too soft. I went to stiffer springs in the front and rear and 45wt and 50wt shock oil, respectively. I also rechecked my ride height and set it arms level in the front and slightly above level in the rear. I was thinking that my corner speed would improve. Well, the car was stiff, but I still didn’t like the way it drove.

I am still in amazement on the power!

Things to consider:

1. I think the batteries that were loaned to me were too heavy: Two 2S2P which is of total of eight lipo cells. I have some 4S1P coming in.

2. I had the MMM setup with 20% punch control. I don’t like punch control with a clutch. There were several corners that I wanted to bust out but the delay was noticeable. Also mid air correction was delayed.

3. The gearing was dead on 48/16 for our track, which is about 34mph (Brian G).

4. I might have made to many changes at one time. I am going back to my original springs and leave the 45 and 50 oil setting. I hope this will help the bottom out issue.

5. More Practice with the E-Car!
