Installing Brass Threaded insert into chassis - 09.25.2009, 02:42 PM

What the best way to install threaded insert like these into plastic chassis parts?

Should the hole be small enough you need a hammer to get them in or loose so they just slip in with the press of a thumb? Heat them up so they plastic melts around them?

Should they be set in with epoxy?

The split down the middle of them make it look like they should spread open when a screw is installed. I haven't installed them before so I am unsure what the best way.

The few times I've used them, I just drilled a hole slightly smaller and used the tip of a soldering iron to gently push them in as they melt the plastic.

I set mine in the same epoxy I use to bed rifle actions with the hole a touch larger than the insert. Insert was snug in the hole.

Both methods will work in plastic just fine. I use a slightly smaller hole and tap the insert in place. When you tighten the screw in place the sides wil spread out and make a tight hold.

What epoxy do you use for bedding? I have always used fiberglass resin.

Thanks for the input fellows. I also emailed Tony Screws and asked about the inserts I received from him and this is the reply he sent to me....

Hi Guy,

Thanks for the kind words.

3mm Inserts - Use a 5/32" drill bit
4mm Inserts - Use a 7/32" drill bit

Just drill the hole, press them in and insert a screw. The insert will
expand and lock into place. Have a GREAT weekend!

Thanks and best regards,

Tony Peczinka

Next time the bulk head is opened up I will be putting some in. Thanks.
