Not brushless but I need help - 09.28.2009, 03:18 AM

I have been having troubles with my brushed setup(I know I will get brushless when money permits. anyway I had a tekin g20 in my slash pretty much all year long and it was working fine..then I decided I wanted to run my 2wd so I put it and a stock motor in the truck well that worked for about 1 hr then all of sudden the motor just completely quit going. now the esc powers on the servo but nothing happens with the motor. I then go another esc a novak 410m5 and it does the same thing only powers the servo I even tried a different motor with the same results. I wired up the traxxas for a test and it went briefly but then just started making a whining noise as if it were being stressed and then just completely quit( I was running them both on 2s lipo 5000 28c or 5200 35c. The batteries were fully charged but I have been running without lipo cutoff eventhough when I normally take them off the batteries are around 7.7 or higher v's when I start to recharge.

do you think I just have a bunch of bad motors?,the esc's? or batts gone?

lmk asap

thanks,
Jayson

I did that didn't seem overly worn to me and I had just cleaned the whole motor out with motor spray

What are the specs on the motors? Turns and winding. What are the specs of the ESC's you used. turn limit on them.

It does sound like the springs are too loose and are not contacting the comm correctly. The comm should be a nice copper color, and the brushes should be about 3/8" long.

hmm never thought of that..I'll check the tekin g20 is rated for 20 cells max and no motor limit the novak is rated no motor limit 4-10 cell use I am only runnning 2 cells I'll see if it's the springs cause the brushes are still long

thanks for your info guys gonna go check it out right now

If you are geared to the moon you will burn up brushes and the springs will weaken to the point they break. I used to run 8 turn single motor and would go through a set of brushes in about 2 battery packs (6 cell NiMh). Since you are using Lipo your burst currents will be a lot higher and you are probably eating brushes and overheating the springs causing them to sag which reduces the pressure on the brush, not to mention heating of the plastic endbell.

yes it will run, if its not worn out.

87/17=5.12:1 what is the gear ratio in the diffs?

nothing worked but the titan but it's slow because it really needs more voltage

ARe you sure the Titan is a 14V motor? From what I have seen of the wiring the titan 12 turn is just a standard 540 motor made to run on 6V or so, the Dual motor setups seem to have the positive and negative tied together in the middle at the ESC, so the voltage drop across the motor is still 7.2V. (EDIT: So it's a Titan 14V motor.)

Did you program the controllers correctly? Use a Volt meter to see what you are getting out at the motor leads with the motor connected. Also try the other motor and press the brushes into the comm and see if they start turning. What did the springs look like?

springs looked normal the tekin was setup I haven't messed with the settings on the novak It spur first then after died I tried pressing the brushes and nothing happened just sat there. the titan I was talking about is the older 14v version for a e-maxx. I dunno i guess I can give it one last shot.

Do you have access to a multimeter for measuring ohms and volts?

no...i checked the the springs and on one side it doesn't go all the way in... i tested another motor that I have a revolver 650 and it works just fine. so I guess the brushes/springs are too old? i dunno i'll try it after getting some new springs and brushes and we'll see

Do yourself a favor and get a meter, even a $3 harbor freight meter will be better than nothing.

Your motors need to be rebuilt.
