Gearing Advice - 06.24.2010, 07:24 PM

I know we've been over a billion times, but I'll ask anyways because it seems to be a unique circumstance.

I was running my truck last weekend and had the ESC, battery and motor being really on the hot side of warm for each component, but the ESC was a bit hotter than I'd really like. I forgot to write down what all the temps were, so all I can say is the motor was less than max as I could still touch it for 2 to 3 seconds, ESC fan was on more often than not, and battery was warm but not hot at all.

RC8Te running 2200kV CNeu, MMM ESC, and 5800 30C 5S Zippy FlightMax and ProLine Badlands on Maximizer rims. I'm geared with 50/16.

Now granted, I was running in mix of dirt, grass and some taller weeds but also wasn't going full out most of the time. I realise the grass/weeds are going to put more strain on the system. I was a bit surprised really at the temps because I was also running the same 2200kV/MMM ESC/5800 30C 5S battery combo in my Savage Flux 5th scale conversion, which is twice as heavy, but I wasn't seeing nearly the temps I was seeing on my RC8Te.

Guess I am wondering if I should gear down to 50/15 or not. Or any other thoughts. Standard "gearing advice" seems to point to all components being warm is good, just think I'm too much on the "hot" side of warm.

Could it be poor soldering of the Deans onto the ESC? Or my 5.5mm bullet -> Deans plus pigtail?
Or do I not have enough air flow with the body? The airflow with the Savage is probably much superior. I was pondering taking out the full front window to get more air flow in there as the RC8Te body sits pretty tight on the chassis.

Thanks!

Unless you couldn't hold your finger to the motor for more than a second, I would say it was probably just from running it in the grass and such.

Your currently geared for about 50mph seems about right. What are the ambient temps. Hot days suck, less room to work with if the motor starts at 90-100 from weather.

Gear it down a few teeth and see if that helps.

I was running 16/46 on a heavy basher e-raze in the grass yesterday and got the motor up to about 150 on a castle 2200 with a xerun 150amp. Grass got in the esc and stopped the fan, which runs all day everyday and still kept under 100. Took the lid off for a few full throttles and it got things running a bit cooler.

Get some air flow going and a tooth or two lower and you should be okay.
