Been playing a bit with converting a Savage to brushless and then making it an XL... the usual stuff.
However Im a tad annoyed with the center gearbox. It takes alot of space, dictates where my motor must be, and needs to be upgraded to HD gears in order to avoid breakdowns (my locked in 2nd gear keeps breaking).
So... why not grab an ultra low KV motor strech the axle and let it grab the dogbones directly? Would this work?
That might be possible with an outrunner, but by doing that you won't be able to change the gearing anymore, so if you are wrong on your Kv, it's the end...
I recommand you to junk your gear box and to use a center diff setup, with a CD you will have a proper traction and change easily the gearing, if needed

I have seen a few out runners mounted like that, to replace the center diff. Success has been mixed from what I understand.
If you go HV you could potentially change the gearing by adding or subtracting lipos...
Not a very fine adjustment, but... Example 10s => 11s etc
