Gearing question - 01.29.2011, 05:42 PM

hi wanted to know if it would be safe to run rcm's new 30t pinion on a 47t spur in a buggy using a mmm 2200kv combo because i need to be able to beat a rustler with vxl combo on 3s in a drag races me on 4s? i am currently running 25/47 and i hit about 50?! another question is will i blow my esc??!? 4s or 6s?

You will be overgeared if you aren't already. You'd be better off going up to 6s and maybe lowering your gearing a little. My guess is that trying to pull that gearing on 4s you will smoke your esc

I through the numbers into the speed calculator and your current gearing should put you at 70+, since you are only hitting about 50 I would def say your way over geared! You should be hitting 50 with a 17 or 18t pinion. I would guggest you gear down before you smoke something. If you want to beat the rustler step up your voltage to 6s and a 16 or 17t pinion will beat the rustler

Your current gearing on 6s is still way high, that gearing would theoretically put you over 100MPH. Use BrianG's speed calculator, the link is in his signature

Yep, the speed calc is your friend! Be careful about getting into these pissing matches with buddies, as E-Revonut said, needing to beat your friend's Rustler could turn into needing to send your ESC (and $75) to Castle pretty darn quick

well today i tested the 25/47 gearing heres some vids:

then i tried to go as fast as i possibly could and then i lost control and this happened :'(

i hit the curb so hard that i broke the concrete and the car went about 25ft away! luckily i have all the parts to fix this except the diff pinion and the esc needs a wiring job...

I would say your definitely overgeared, car should have been quicker. If your losing control at those speeds what's gonna happen at 70MPH? I would concentrate less on beating your friend's rustler and more on keeping your buggy from going up in smoke or obliterating itself again. That's alot of carnage from hitting a curb. I've hit things before with my truggy, such as a fencepost that is just off the back straigtaway at my track, actually got a ringer just like a horseshoe would, never broke anything though.

I'm not saying you where going slow, but if your geared for 70+ on 4s....Well I just don't think your going to do it without one of the million dollar MaxAmps 150C packs Do I think you where going 45-50 yes and that wuld do that kind of damage hitting a curb head on
