Castle Phoenix air ESC firmware question - 04.27.2013, 07:18 AM

Hey there guys,

Haven't been browsing the RCM forums for awhile. Cars have been on the back burner, got bit by the airplane bug and have been having a blast with those lately.

I have a Castle Phoenix 35 in one of my new planes, and I have a question about the newest firmware. I believe it is 4.xx, not sure exact number.

What happens is when I open up the throttle to 100% it seems to govern/limit the current. Going to 100% then dropping down, then back up to 100% (all rapidly, probably a few times a second). I looked at the settings in CastleLink and figured it was the current limiting setting (the behavior is almost exactly what they describe in the little "?" settings explanation) but it still behaves the same even after turning off the current limiting. When I switch to the latest firmware of the 3.xx series it will run at 100% until the LVC cuts, without any temp issues (even full throttle current is only 15A max). The batteries being used are 1300mah 3S Nanotech, and have no problem handling the 15A load.

Any ideas what is causing this newer firmware to limit the output to the motor, even with current limiting turned off?

What does it matter? If the old firmware works fine keep it.
I have had several anomilies like that after upgrading firmware on different devices, so I am now a great believer in " if it aint broke, dont fix it." something needs to have a really fantastic new feature for me to consider upgrading, doing what it has always done a bit better does not cut it for me.

Just curious I guess. When I get a new Castle ESC I always load it to the newest firmware because many of the updates have bug fixes i.e. it is a little bit broke, it does need to be fixed. Don't really care about getting extra features or functionality for this air ESC. When I did the Phoenix I noticed the behavior so I asked about it. For now I'm sticking with the latest 3.xx

With our aircraft ESCS, if they start behaving badly go to off throttle. It will then start to beep and flash 1 to 6 times over and over until you throttle back up or unplug the ESC. These are error codes. Check the manual that comes with or the one online to see what these are.
