Lehner Basic XL 2400 getting hot on 2cell Lipo? - 10.01.2006, 01:54 PM

I am using the Mamba Max controller and Lehner Basic XL on a stock plastic Stampede(metal dif & idler gear). Should my motor be getting hot? Whats a guy got to do to get a cool running motor around here. I have 8000mah and 12000mah lipo packs and need something I can run balls out for long periods of time without melting anything. I have an 8000mah 3cell lipo pack I was hoping to use with this motor but it just gets way to hot even on 2cell. Can anyone coment on how hot the new Maba Max motors run? I am trying to decide on either getting the Mamba Max 4600kV Combo, or just drop the coin for a Lehner 1900 motor. Wanderer 12s is another option. I just want something that runs as cool as possible.

The XL2400 won't run well on 2S...Thats only 18K RPM's....You need to shoot for more like 35K....That is why its running hot...The 3S won't get as hot...but it will still only be around 27K RPM's...

It's running in his less ideal range, you need more volts to feed the animal..

So you're saying higher voltage/higer rpm will actually help it run cooler? I will try my 3cell and make the truck as low geared as possible, 12t pinion/90t spur. I could make up a 4cell battery but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to gear it down far enough and it would be way to fast for my truck.

A too low geared vehicle may also results in a hot motor

Yes I hear that alot, but yet it seems every time I go up a tooth on my pinion it only results in hotter temps.

I just tried a 3 cell with the 12t pinion/90t spur, and it does run cooler. With that gearing its actually not very fast so I am going to make up a 4 cell battery and see if that gives me the power/temps I am aiming for.

With a 4s battery I would suggest using a 20t pinion. That may seem odd, but that setup will yield ~40mph, which might still cause the motor to be undergeared.
