which lipos to get? -
10.08.2006, 09:33 PM
i have a ss+ 5800 in a bk2 and drive it at socal rc raceway(in southern california) it is a fairly small track in doors, i was recomended the max amps 2s 8000 lipo battery but i was wondering if that might be an over kill and if maby getting 2 4000's or a 6000 would be a better choice or if there are any other batteries i should consider?
Thanks

If you don't mind the extra weight, more capacity will extend runtime. And since the higher capacity battery most likely has a higher continuous amp rating, it should heat up less. Voltage will drop less under load as well.

Heh, you're not too far from me. I'm about 5mins from SoCal RC Raceway.
The 4000mah should be fine, since it's rated at 60amps continuous. I have the older style Maxamps 2s 6000mah (10C/60amps continuous) and am using that in my Dark Impact (1/10 4wd buggy) with a Mamba Max 5700 system, which requires more power than the SS5800 in a 2wd buggy.
BTW, if you're familiar with the Hobby People in Fountain Valley, that's where I work :). Do you know Geovanni by any chance?

ok but would having one 8000 (obviously having longer run time then the 4000) then having to wait while charging it to run again be better, then having two 4000 driving one while other is charging and let the esc cool off during battery swap?
by the way around how long do each last(8000 and 4000) and about how long to charge (with a duratrax ice)
Thanks
and metal man i am familiar with hobby people in FV but im not in there too often so im not sure if i know u, but il look next time i go

Since you can only charge the batteries at 1C or less (one times the capacity), the charge times would be roughly equal, about 1hr. 15mins for a complete charge.
You could probably get up to 30mins racing with the 8000mah at the track on the SS5800.
I'm only working at Hobby People Fridays 5-8 and Saturdays 2-6. You can't miss me, I'm the tallest guy that works there :).

I would go for the 8000....Charge time would be the same, either way, like Metalman said, so you would still have to wait 45 minutes or more...Besides, I would never leave a LiPo battery unattended while charging...

All I can add is that I have had terrible experiences with Thunderpower packs. Hooked up an Eagletree data logger and found my TP pack's voltage dumped under load. And this was a 6000 mAh 3s pushing a Basic 4200 in a pede! GP3300's voltage didn't budge.
