5s lipo

I'm going to uppgrade to 5s lipo on my e-revo, but wonder shold i use one pack with 2s and one 3s? Or should i order 5s packs right away?
How do other do this?

Are you putting all your batteries on one side or do you plan to have one on each side?

If you are putting the pack on one side, I'd personally go with a single 5s pack. You won't need a Y adaptor which means less connections and wiring. Really, the only advantage to seperate packs is you have more mounting options...

And with two, you can distribute the weight better. IMO. I would go one 2s and one 3s

Then to upgrade to 6s at a later date just buy one 3s pack and you are there!

Exactly, if that is a step you need to go...one step left. Although, it would depend on the motor/esc.

Of course you're limited by the motor & esc specs. But you know the nature of our hobby. It's like 2'-itis in the boating world. You always want something better, faster, etc., etc.

Doing the 2s+3s gives you the flexibility IF you ever need it. For now you get the mounting flexibility & more even weight distribution.

I think you have more Charger options too since some chargers will charge up to 4s only.

You really shouldn't connect different # of cycled (aged) packs together... different characteristics, that could be dangerous.

I also like the 2s + 3s setup. I found it actually gives very good balance. Just mount the 2s pack on the same side as the motor and put the 3s pack on the opposite side of the motor.

That's a valid point, especially if they they have seen a significant number of cycles. I should have mentioned that. Sorry.

Yes, that is a valid point. If you've been running your vehicle for a number of cycles and then plan to upgrade to 6s total, you shouldn't simply replace the 2s with another 3s since the "old" 3s will have more cycles on it. The importance of this becomes more apparent as you put more and more cycles on the old pack.

Yes, i would think the max cycles you could put through them before you should forget about putting more cells in the pack is probably 50 cycles. But, really you don't want to do it. Just do the research about a good setup, and stick with it.

You could over-discharge one cell in the pack, the voltage of the pack may be the 'cut-off' value, but 5 of cells would be above cut-off, and the one cell that was added would be below cut-off, and i don't even have to tell you what happens next.

This is where FMA balancers and DPM's have the edge, they monitor each cell during charge AND discharge so it doesn't matter how many cycles the cells have, the DPM's will cutoff the voltage when the first cell hits the voltage limit.
