MM questions - possibly time to upgrade the HV4.5... - 02.16.2007, 11:42 AM

Well, I was out running and the HV system started acting up (quite severely at that). I think its just moisture causing it cause after it sat in my room is was getting progressively better each time I tested it - we'll see though.

This has made me think of the possibility of going sensoreless - that is, sell my HV system to fund this. Between all of the MY system stuff, I can probably get a good 330+ dollars out of it (since I got an HV ESC + the 4.5 and 6.5 motors plus all the extra caps put on). This doesn't put my far off from an MM ESC and a Lehner 1940/6. Also, the MM ESC is water resistance (from what I here) so it should be alot more resilient.

I will be using all this with my current 4S/12cell/14cell packs. What do you guys think? Do you think I can push 50mph out of the system?

I was getting 40.6 out of my 4.5 on my Lipo's with a 1/2 charge....and I obviously don't want to step down...though I doubt that will be a problem.

all i think is sell the hv and get a real setup. If you can sell it for 330, get a neu/mm combo.

Sounds like you did some GPS testing :027:. And I'm glad to hear you want to get into real brushless :005:.

A Lehner motor would sure allow your Revo to be faster than my Revo. 50mph, however, might be a stretch. As you know, I have to run a fan on the MM in my Revo with a 7XL on 16.5v, and it's getting to at least 40mph (I'll have to slap the GPS on it some time). The Lehner will run more efficiently, so at the same speed as the 7XL it should be easier on the ESC. I would say sell your HV stuff first (since you're waiting for the x-braces anyways), and then get the sensorless system.

Well...the Lehner has to be AT LEAST faster than the HV...I got 40.6 out of the HV on 1/2 charged lipos (14.8v) - on a full charge its 16.8, so I probably would got something in the neighborhood of 43-45.

I have to assume a 1940/6 will get better speed that that? Also, since I'm running 4S, should that be easier on the MM already? Maybe I should just wait till the MMM?

The HV motors use a 380 size rotor, just an XL (or something along those lines). Lehner uses 540 size rotors in their 19 series. So you're pretty much guarranteed more power out of the 1940.

I think you should go for the Mamba Max. No sense in waiting :).

Hmm...and I can always just use the MM in another car if I upgrade...

Also, Someone told me that the MMM is coming out in April :D

BP - I don't have the 4.5r, but as you probably remember my 1940 7 turn is night and day from the 6.5r. Keep in mind the cost/hassle of getting a pinion/spur/slipper combo that can handle the 19 series. The motors are top notch.

Well...it pretty much settled - dad gave me the "OK."

I'm going to get the HV system fixed and then sell it. Hopefully, I'll get somewhere around 325 for everything.

I think I'm going to get the MM with the 1940/6.

Any recommendations on the UBEC? I will probably use Mike's but I've heard that it causes glitching in certain setups? Shouldn't be a problem with Spektrum though I assume?

Also, anyone have any Idea on gearing?

Wow! I never thought I'd see you stray away from your sensored setups! Welcome to the dark(er) side. :)

Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but a 6 turn motor on the MM seems a little on the low side. You'll probably need a fan to keep it cool. Just my $0.02...

I'm using Spektrum and Mike's UBEC in my Revo and have no glitching trouble at all. Whenever I use a switching BEC, I like to add at least a 1,000uf 10v cap to the free AUX receiver slot - helps filter any "noise" and provides a little oomph for the relatively high current pulses the steering servo sometimes pulls. Also, keep the BEC away from the antenna.

Yea - I have the Spektrum Voltage Protector in my AUX slot (its basically a 4700uf cap). Good to hear with the no glitching - I love Spektrum!

Well, I figure if a bunch of people are running 7 and 8 turn motors on 5S in the MM, I can run an efficient 6 turn on 4S. The wattage should end up being similar. I will be putting a fan on it for sure.

And ideas on gearing though?

Brian, as for the straying from the sensorless setup - I got smacked in the head by a sudden idea/observation. The only reason I kept the sensoreless system was the guarantee that it wouldn't got from a dead start...but how many times do you start per race? One! (assuming you dont crash...this might pose a problem... :p)

Also, after driving my 18T, sensorless is fine... Don't get me wrong I still love the HV system, but another big lure of sensorless is the simplicity and increased water resistance. MetalMan literally drove his BL XT2 into a pond and the only thing that started glitching was the receiver.

However, I am comtemplating getting the 1940/7 high amp version and possibly running 5S in the future once the MMM comes out.

It wasn't the MM on the X-Terminator (version 1, BTW), but the Mtroniks Truck. This thing is completely waterproof :005:.

Here's an idea, don't buy a UBEC yet if you can help it. There's something that should be amazing coming out relatively soon. You might just want to use a receiver pack while you wait, like I am :027:.
