Unhappy Another 9920 Lets Out its Smoke... - 05.13.2007, 08:12 PM

I didn't even do anything to it this time. I was just trying to hook everything up. I had a 7-cell battery hooked up to it, it plugged into the 3-channel rx, and a 5 cell rx pack plugged into the rx slot. I took out the red jumper to program it, but it didn't turn on. I got a whiff of the familiar burning electronics smell, so I ran my hand over everything to see what was hot. Sure enough, the caps were burning hot. As fast as I could, I unplugged everything I could, but it was too late and a loud hiss came out followed by a lot of smoke from the caps area.
I can't afford to get it fixed, so I may try and sell my Maxx, since it has been nothing but trouble, and get some kind of Mamba system for my Rustler. It makes me sad that nothing even wants to work around here. Basement flooded, blew an RX, broke an output shaft on the Maxx, and now this stupid ESC has gone and let its smoke out:035:.

Is there any warranty at all, because it had just been replaced by Mike last November?

You didn't reverse polarity on the input did you? Usually, caps don't blow that easily by just hooking them up unless they were on the ragged edge already, or simply bad to begin with...

Well, I'm pretty sure I didn't reverse polarize it, as the only way to do that would be to have incorrectly soldered my Deans on, but I would have known about that before now. I'm not sure if it is the cap or not, but one of the caps seems to have oozed an epoxy like substance out the side that has cooled and bonded with the shrink wrap, making it very difficult to remove. Also, that cap's metal top is kind of bulging out, but the others are not.

Could it have done that by being plugged into a fried rx, because the one the ESC was plugged into didn't seem to be working before all the smoke came out.

Well, I just got done testing it to see if it might somehow work. I found that the input wires have some kind of internal short, because my battery gets really, really hot, really, really quick when I plug it in. I also used my voltmeter to determine that it has continuity. It also seems that once again, it has fried both of my receivers, the one in my Rustler, and the one in my E-Maxx:036:.

I don't have enough money to get the ESC repaired, muchless all the electronics it has fried, so I'll probably be selling my Maxx:frown:. I love it a lot, but it is just too expensive to maintain:012:.
Since the only electronics I could include with the truck as an RTR would be a steering servo, and maybe a shifting servo (single speed ATM), I think I would get more money by parting it out.
We will see though.

I fried my 9920 a couple months back and it only costed me about $30 to get it repaired by BK and I had it back in about a week.

That's because you are in Germany! It took me 8 months to get my first 12020 back from warrantied repair, and the thing still did not work right. And my 9920, Mike just got back, and I sent that off about 4 months ago I believe! Still not sure on the repair cost though....

Will do, but most likely will just get rid of BK all together, not to sure on it yet. Quark has got me spoiled along with MM. Probably would not hurt to have an extra esc around though. :)
