Help! I need 8x15x5 bearings -
09.27.2007, 12:33 PM
Hey all,
I just scored some nip UE 8mm drive shafts from ebay and now I need the bearings to make them work in my steering knuckles. Does anybody know where I can buy some 8mm x 15mm x 5mm bearings? Its an odd size and UE is no longer selling their knuckles w/bearings or I'd just buy those.
Thanks for the help

Avid offers 6 x 15 (no help there) and 8x14. If you have no luck locating 8x15 (I'm guessing you have older UE Knuckles) ask Mike here at RC-Monster if he'll whip up some sleeves to allow you to use the 8x14 bearings in the 15mm knuckles. That should be a reasonable fix. Your next best bet is ebay or google around to see what you find.
Good luck. If I locate some I'll get in touch with you.
BTW....nice looking truck buddy!

Hey...that's a great idea. The UE knuckles are GONE. Do you think the Revo knuckles would work? They accept the 8x16x5 bearings. Otherwise, I will ask Mike to see what he can do.

that really is a good idea...and you wouldn't have to do anything to the knuckles.
maybe you could take your 8mm cvds to your LHS to see if they would fit in a revo knuckle?
i took my 15mm knuckles to a local machine shop and he bored the holes open 1mm. the 16mm bearings fit perfectly, and then you could use either 6mm or 8mm cvd's.

my time there...and i learned a lot with this guy, so i don't consider that a cost at all.
he did it for free. he's an older guy that runs a small-ish shop with his 2 sons. it's not extremely state of the art, but has some pretty impressive stuff. i was in there for probably 2 hours - it took him a long time to figure out how to a) hold such an odd shaped piece of metal like a UE knuckle, and b) how to get the extra 1mm that was taken out to be perfectly centered and true, and at the correct depth. he told me he just likes to putter at small jobs like that for the challenge, not the money. needless to say, i thanked him profusely.
since that time i managed to find newer 16mm knuckles, and sold the old set off lol.

I live in an area where the work ethic is very different...sad. Looks like I will go the Revo knuckle route.

if that doesn't work, let me know. i can see if he'd be willing to do it again - i just can't be held liable if something (for some strange reason) goes wrong. most likely it won't, but it's still a chance you'll take.
btw - congrats on the 8mm cvd score!!

I agree with Clodmaxx. A machine shop is the way to go. But you have 2 routes to take with a machine shop. If you don't have any local that you can find try asking auto repair shops if they do machining. Aslo call your local colleges and universities. They usualy have some sort of a machining program. The 2 options you have is:
1. Like Clodmaxx said have them drill your hole bigger or have them make your sleeve to shrink the hole. Mike great at all projects but it might take him some time. He is busy.
2. If you find a machine shop ask if they have bearings. I use to work for a guy that carried any size bearing you needed. He retired so I can't ask him now. Sorry.
Have you tried the auto part stores in your area? They usualy have a good assortment of bearings too. Good Luck!

Brother...I hear ya...but I live in West Freaking Virginia and anything local is Oh-You-Tee...out. I have stories to tell but they would just make other West Virginians angry. But as an example alot of folks around here think RC stands for Royal Crown soda. I could drive into Maryland, but the work ethic there isn't the greatest either and nobody there is willing to do small jobs at a reasonble price. Don't get me wrong...I've got a lot of $$$ in my trucks and I'm not afraid to spend the cash...in fact I'd rather spend the cash on new parts and save myself the frustration of dealing with "wuts that fer? A little cute funy car?" If the new parts don't work, I'll shelf it and either take Clodmaxx up on his offer or contact Mike.

If you do go with the Revo knuckles, I'd try the RPM ones, or an Al setup as the stockers are a little weak from what I've found. Some have no issues, but I was popping the pillow balls out of the stockers left and right until I got RPM.
I know the RPM ones use different bearings than stock, so you might want to check into that before you buy them.

That just reminds me off when I lived in southern maryland in the 7th district near Mechanicsville. Those hill billys could not even name the different towns. They jsut called it the 7th district. I hear ya about the work and stuff. Good luck finding the bearings or just go with the revo Knuckles.
