Toasted Lipo!?!?!?!?! - 10.02.2007, 07:44 AM

OK I messed something up. I puffed a Lipo. I am kind of stumped. It’s on my GEVO. I had (being the key word) 2 Lipo’s ran in serious. They were both 6000 mah 2s2p. I was letting a 7 year old play with it. He was not jumping the throttle or any thing. Just simple nice and slow run. Then out of the blue it stopped in its tracks. I walked over thinking gearing. I pulled the top off and could see the problem. Wow lipo’s get hot. The other battery was cold. The motor and MM were cool. That one battery was hot enough to not touch. What’s up with it? Any thoughts?

Sounds like one pack was not as full as the other.

yeah... what he said. do you use a balancer when you charge them?

that battery actually has 4 cells in it. 2 in series, and each of those 2 sets in parallel. then... since you're running 2 packs, you have 8 cells in your setup! you need to make sure they're all the same voltage.

how's your charger setup?

If you are running 2 of those batts in series, then your external wiring should be ok. I would still check all of you connections for a bad solder joint anyway, but if you had a bad connection on a series setup the truck would just stop moving. Sounds to me like the parallel connections in the pack itself came loose and one pack was left as a 3000 2s not a 6000 2s. You then probably overdischarged the 2 cells that were still connected. That would account for the heat and puffing. Give maxamps a call and ask for Jason, you may get another lipo or at least some sort of reson why it gave out.

I have a Hyperion setup. 1210i charger and LBA10 balancer. This battery didn't have balancer leads. I didn't even think of balancing. There's the problem. The other battery is new and balanced. Like I said "I messed up." My bad. It ran fine by itself.
