noob Shimming after bearing replacement -

Hi !
Need to replace my axelbearings on my Revo 3.3
I tried one side but I can pull the axel in/out quite alot after I put in the new bearings is installed.
Am I correct in assuming that I need to put some shims in between the axelpin and outerbearing/axelcarrier ?
Really no one has any ideas ?
To make it a bit more clear, after the bearing replacement I can push/pull the wheel in and out quite abit, and the axel (in where I put the wheel nut on) is moving so it not just that I havent tighten the wheel nut.
Any ideas at all if shimming is needed or if this is "another" problem ?
when you actually mount the tire/wheel on it and tighten it up, 99% of the play should be gone. When its just sitting on the bench without the wheel, that play is normal
