HV 4.5 e-revo gearing -
01.18.2008, 11:06 PM
I did it, I'm sick of nitro tuning problems so I built a gorillamaxx e-revo. I used the Novak HV4.5 system and I'm looking for suggested gearing and what I should expect for speeds and runtimes. Right now I'm running a 70T spur and 18T pinion, traxxas talon tires and some cheapo 4500mAh 6cell batteries with the new traxxas plugs on everything. I have run a few times with this gearing, pretty impressed with the speed but the torque is amazing! If the tires get traction it will flip over backwards from a roll. My Revo 3.3 has only pulled a few wheelies in it's life and never anything like this! Because of that amazing torque I'm wondering if the gearing is to low. The motor and esc stay pretty cool (next purchase is a temp gun) but I have no problem holding my hand on either. Any suggestions for gearing would be greatly appreciated. I will be upgrading to LiPo's as soon as I sell my T-maxx 2.5R

Does it go fast enough for you? If your happy with the top sped I would leave it as it is.
It never hurts to have too low of gearing and I find it really fun to drive a truck with a lot of punch in the low end.

Speed has been decent with the 70/18 but way to much punch on the bottom. I have also stepped up the batteries to Venom 4200 7 cells. I have pulled a few. succesful back flips on takeoff on high traction surfaces wich is cool and all but it's getting old having to keep flipping the thing back on its wheel after taking off. I stepped the gearing up to 64/18 but that didn't affect the flipping at all. I have now changed the gearing to 64/22. It might be to much for the motor but I don't think so cause it will still do a complete flip on carpet. Brushless is the way to go!!! Tons of torque!!!!

Here is a pic. I didn't do the body, bought a rolling chassis and it came with it, looked like crap with the tires the guy threw in but once I put some stock revo talons on it the Hummer body looks decent, just wishing for a better paint job. A spektrum DX3R is in the works as is a crowd pleaser 2.0 body

i blew mine up on 18/70 , i was using lipo and it was in a g3r with emaxx trans and locked in 2nd, i was also in grass , so be careful
mine gave me no warning, it was running great, went in and recharged my batteries and it never worked again
i would stay at the 18/70 and if you go to lipo go to 12/72

Talking with my LHS they have heard of many problems with people running this set up with LiPo's. I was thinking of making the swith and they said that they haven't had one run right yet with them. Thats when I bought the 7 cell venoms. I'm gonna try the higher gearing still, although leary about it what fun is life if you don't take chances. Novak claims 40-45 MPH is possible with this in an e-maxx, my revo ways about 9.5 lbs in running gear (about the same as an E-maxx without batteries) so my goal is to approach the 40 MPH mark. If I burn it up it'll suck but that just means I'll get a better set up! When the parking lot dries up I'll post my results!

Are you running the stock emaxx clutch setup?
I am running the strobe slipper with mod1 spur 51t. I just toasted my HV 4.5 system after 20 secs this weekend, way overgeared (14/51). Newb here. I am thinking of switching to the stock emaxx clutch for more gearing options. If not, I'm stuck with the 51t spur and probably a 9t pinion cause I couldn't find a mod1 8t.

what are you running for batteries? Thats not to far off from my original gearing of 70/18. 70/18 works out to 3.89:1 ration and yours works out to 3.86:1, my motor and esc where barely even getting warm, prolly about 110-120 degrees, just enough to say they where warm. I'm not positive about the temp but thats a close est. I know hot water out of the sink in a restaurant is aprox 165, novak suggests no more than 160, and mine isn't even coming close to as hot as the water! As I said in my last post my LHS hasn't had any luck with this system running LiPo's. I wish I had consulted them before buying this setup but I did it on a whim 1 night and bought everything to build this off ebay without doing enough research on what to run for motor/esc. I thought that if Novak was good enough for Traxxas they'd b good enough for me. Now I found out Traxxas has ditched Novak and they're building their own esc for the new water-proof E-maxx because Novak won't stand behind they're product. If I melt mine down I'll prolly wait for the MMM that's supposed to be released in March.

I'm wondering if my tranny may be locked in first instead of second as I was told! That would explain my extreme gearing change needed to approach the speeds Novak has said are possible on their website. Any one got any ideas as to if this could be the case? Or tell me how to find out without tearing the tranny out and taking it apart?

Its completely possible you have it in first. The gear it should be locked into is the one thats closest to the spur gear, or when the shifter is pushed in.
I'm going to assume so because I blew my ESC sky high running 68/14 in a light G2R setup (~9.25lbs RTR). So you running 70/18 has me very suspicious.

I tore my tranny out and apart and confirmed my suspicions. There is no second gear in my tranny only the 36T first gear. Doing the math and shooting for Novak's suggested 22:1 reduction for monster trucks I would need a spur/pinion reduction of 3.0067:1. My current gearing of 64/22 puts me at 2.909:1 so I am slightly over geared right now. I'm going to gear it down slightly for safety and keep my current tranny gearing. Only cause I have gears to get me where I want without spending any more $
Stock revo diffs = 2.643:1 37/14
Tranny
input-idler = 1.538:1 20/13
idler-1st = 1.8:1 36/20
*idler-2nd = 1.55:1 31/20
Going to go back to 64/18 (3.555:1) for now, ought to keep me plenty safe!

Added a Robinson Racing dual slipper and a crowd pleaser 2.0 body, kept the paint very simple with one color but I think it looks really sharp and the niro guys wont realize what just blew by them!

Well you aren't the first person to do that. Nor will you be the last. That is pretty common to happen with the Novak motors because their shafts are so small in diameter.

Anyone know when Novak is supposed to release the 5mm upgraded rotor and endbell?
