Custom Kydex Battery Tray - 10.23.2007, 07:57 PM

Hey all,

I need a battery tray for a project I am working on. I have attached a diagram and hoping somebody here can point me in the right direction. I was thinking about using Kydex (the same material many tactical gun holsters are made of). Kydex is incredibly strong and rigid...but not too rigid. Any ideas on where to go or alternate materials?

Graphite Elegance would have been an option but I can't seem to get a response from them and Kydex seems like a good alternate for this application.

Appreciate any advice offered.

Thanks! I appreciate the offer...I will PM you to coordinate. I assume you use a band saw to cut Kydex? Then just use a heat gun to shape it to the desired form? I read in another thread you have a Jammin CR buggy...this battery tray is going in a Jammin CRT.

Here are some pics of my trays .

Yes a ban saw & table saw. Then i cut a 2/4 to the size i wanted the tray to be. then i clamped it in a vise & used a heat gun to form it. the trick is once you heated & formed it dont move it untill it totally cools, or it will change shape.

Would this kydex be easier/better than lexan to make battery trays out of? I have tried a few times to make the trays out of lexan and it worked ok, but the lexan does not bend too easily, even with heat. Do you glue the sides where thay meet up?

RCHippie, I appreciate all the info and the offer. I probably will take you up on the offer...I just don't have some of the tools & materials required for a clean finish (i.e., specifically the band saw and aluminum end caps). I did send Mike an email asking if he could make me a battery tray but he hasn't answered back yet. I also asked him about some other odds and ends awhile back and haven't had any luck with those either.
